    Hello to all! (y)

New to this forum...what a great site...a pat on the back for finding this one!

I am hoping to take up Figure painting and want to start out with Crimean War uniforms....hence the "nick", in 54mm. British, French, Russian and Turkish.

I must admit that it all looks daunting. I have bought and read Bill Horans Masterclass. WOW, impressive. He is my inspiration and I can see that there are some superb painters on this site too.

I was wondering what is the best figure range for me to start on. I was thinking of F M Beneito. A good choice for a beginner?

Any suggestions on a good uniform painting reference? I guess Osprey?

I am, of course willing to accept any and all suggestions.

    Hi Martin

Welcome to our world, Beneito figures are a very good start, which medium have you decided to paint with do you already have a preference for a scale you wish to start in (54mm, 70mm, 75mm, 90mm 120mm) as there are so many sales that are available.... well good luck and don’t be affraid to ask anybody on here for tips and advice...

    Hi Dave,
Thanks for the quick reply. 54mm is my chosen scale thus far, although I can be swayed. I will paint in Vallejo Acrylics as I have most of the colours already. I currently build AFV's and Aircraft. I want to get away from that genre and move into something a little different.

    Welcome Martin!

Im sure you will like it here.
My suggestion is Andrea Minatures as they have a big range and are affordable and available from Historex Agents.

    Good luck.

Hi Martin I am not one to sway you in any direction as far as your chosen medium is concerned. I too am, an acrylic man, but I do use other mediums, because of different effects that are achievable ...

Martin - Welcome to the wonderful world of figures!! I don't know if you are a member of any clubs but if you aren't try and get to one. One near you that is very good is BMSS Aldershot. There are some great modellers there who will give you some great advice. If things haven't changed these are the details, they meet on the third Thursday of each month in the Willis Hall, Sandy Lane, Church Crookham, from 7.30 to 10.00 pm.

Hello Martin and welcome to the planet. stay assured that if you ask for advice you will get it here. There are some great sculptors/painters on this site. With regards to figure choice there is so much to choose from. I wouldn't even dare to suggest one brand in particular.

Hi Martin, and welcome to the planet - you will find anything and everything you need here, and many, many genuine people willing to share their experience in this amazing hobby.

I would echo previous posts - do what you feel most comfortable doing. Find what media suit you best and develop your skills, both hands-on and with support and guidance from here. I've been in this figure hobby since before god had a dog, and I'm still learning from these guys.

Welcome again, and I can assure you of a long and fruitful association :)

Cheers (and let us see your progress)

If it's Crimean War subjects in 54mm you're after, you might also want to look at Hecker and Goros, Elisena and Art Girona. Great figures all.

Martin, welcome to the madness mate!

If it's the Crimean period you're after look no further than www.sarumsoliders.com

They are a beautiful range of (true) 54mm figures and do many from the Britsh Army from the years 1850-1930. A much neglected chapter in modelling if you ask me.

Also they sell at about 8 quid each.

I use the term 'true' 54mm as you will begin to notice that between manufacturers scales are not all the same!

I can't recommend them highly enough, especially their 17th Lancer! He is a real gem.

    Hi chaps,

    Thanks again for the replies.
You have made me feel very welcome indeed :)
I have now decided, after your advice, and a few hours on the net, that I would go for Andrea Miniatures 17th Lancer Rgt Crimea in 54mm painted in Vallejo Acrylics.
I already have an account with Historex, so to make life easier, I shall order from them.

This pic is posted on Historex website, I don't know who painted it.

I will try to get him started soon enough and post my progress here exclusively.

I hope you will all be a s gentle as you have been welcoming. ;)
