Love the green tarnishing on the chain mail and the buckles & adornments. A great effect, which I now intend to shamelessly copy when I paint my next Roman!

Looking forward to seeing where this one is going. Great start!

He looks young for that many decorations and Centurion rank . First ref photo will be more correct for age I think .

I think you equate modern average lifespans to the same era as this figure depicts. In 1st C. AD most people never reached 40. As such, I would suspect that 'veterans' like the re-enactment guy were rather thin on the ground as Centurions.

Also, some sons of the patricians were also allowed direct entry as minor ranking Centurions - some senior families even had them enter as Tribune rank - in the high numbered cohorts and so, a centurion in his early 20's whilst certainly not common, would likewise not be that unusual either.

As for the awards, that may be in conflict with his years I agree but in some campaigns, awards may have been given quite generously to favoured or 'sponsored' officers with connections; who knows.

Someone like the Primus Pilus however would be a more senior man of the age group you suggest.

Irrespective, I have this figure and it is one of the finest detailed and fitting figures I have seen. This is a great paint tutorial.
