WIP Artilleryman Ascari, Culqualber (Ethiopia) 1941

    Hi Gents,
In summer-autumn 1941 Culqualber was a stronghold defending Gondar in Ethiopia.
Between the defenders of Royal Italian Army was the 44th autonomous battery on 70/15 guns leaded by liutnant Gabrio Moretti, with colonial personell.
I've alredy designed and 3d printed in 1/24th scale most of the gun and my new project is the crew for a diorama.
The scene is supposed to be with the commander Moretti and two artillery man.
Here the first steps of the first artilleryman. Any hint is welcome! ;)

These artillerymen are manning a 77/28 widely used by the Royal Italian Army in Ethiopia.

    Thank you Taliesin,
Thank you Nap. That's a precious book so hard to find; I have the one that the author wrote about Libyan uniforms and never found this one. The bandoleer in your picture is the two-pouches, designed for the six bullets cartridge of the Carcano mod. 91. Mine is the three pouches, intended for the Bodeo revolver m. 89.
Happy new year to you and the whole community! ;)

Excellent project. Would love to see some images of the 3D printed artillery gun, sounds excellent in 1/24. Good luck on putting the diorama together. :)

    Hi Gents!
Some steps forward for the Ascari.
The cover and the flake for the tarbusc, the characteristic hat of East African colonial troops.
The puttees and a wip right arm.
Also made the holster for the Bodeo mod. 89 revolver.
The posture of this guy looks quite natural to me, what do you think?
Thanks for any hint or comment.;)

I really like what you've done so far. I agree with the others: good, natural posture. The only detail my eyes stumbled over is the seemingly very tight-fitting sleeve.
Looking forwar to how your vignette progresses.

Thanks guys for the feedback! So I go on!;)

You're right Karl, the arm is just sketched and though most of ascari were very slim, it's too thin, and I'm giving more volume to it.:)

    Greetings!

    Hi Gents!

The kneeling ascari artilleryman is next to finish, some few details and it'll be ready.
I still have a lot to learn about the folds of the fabrics, nevertheless I'm satisfied enough with the result.
Any hint to sculpt the very tiny stars under the chevrons?

    Thanks for watching! ;)

I missed this update, excellent progress. I think the folds look fine to me, I agree it's quite challenging getting them right. No idea how to sculpt those tiny details. Maybe try to cut them out of lead foil?

    Thanks,
The tiny stars are so ... tiny!:(
I'll make a try with lead foil following your suggestion.
