Could you maybe tell us a bit more about how you made this? How did you form the boat hull so precisely? What material are you using?

Magic Sculpt material. We find a drawing. We translate to the desired scale. I make frames. I am making a keel. I fix the frames on the keel. I fill the voids between the frames with plasticine. I get a matrix. I roll out Magic Sculpt with a thin layer of 1.5 mm. I put it on the matrix. I cut off the excess. I get 3 parts: keel, left and right half of the hull. I level with a file. I mark the boards. According to the markup, I fasten thin strips outside and inside. I level and finish to the required thickness. In short, everything.

Aris, thanks! You're absolutely right! The idea was proposed by Alexander Bespalko. 9th century Eastern Slavs. This picture is at the heart of the idea. I reduced the size of the ship. And creatively redo the details. Should be interesting.

An interesting scale: 1/43 (7mm:1') is the standard scale used in the UK for O Gauge model railways. This model has been beautifully made, open boats require so much more care than decked boats because there is no way of hiding any construction 'sins': the interior planking is just as vsible as the external planking. I have made a few open boats and use a similar technique of a basic framework but I use basswood planking.

PS: for years I have been courting with the idea of a dio in 1/35 of a knarr complete with its crew.Of course in 1/35 it is a huge affair and difficult to materialize.In 1/43 it sounds ideal.Let's hope Alex will decide to make this a reality.
