Unfortunately the Kiso doesn't look like most peoples idea of a horse. If sculptors used it there would be a lot of people who would not buy it for this reason. Sometimes realism has to be sacrificed for commercial reasons. Samurai figures seem to suffer this more than most.
At least this sculpt is on a small mount more in keeping with the size of a Kiso.

I've seen several discussions about samurai military horses in this community. And I began to wonder if there was some kind of misunderstanding there. They all refer to Japanese native horses as "Kiso", but kiso-horse is only one of eight Japanese native horse breeds that have avoided extinction. "Kiso" is not a general term for Japanese native horses. They should already know that too.
Kiso-horse is the only native horse bred in Honshū, but that only means "the only native horse that is not extinct. And until the 19th century (or even until the early 20th century), there were 11 breeds of native Japanese horses, including the kiso-horse, even if limited to the honshū. Samurai certainly had multiple options besides Kiso-horse when procuring warhorses. And there is no evidence that they were all of the same size and shape as the 'modern kiso-horse'.
I do not deny the assertion that 'it is an error for a samurai to be riding a thoroughbred. Similarly, I do not deny that samurai rode kiso-horse. However, I do not think it is correct for me to believe that all samurai must ride kiso-horse. Is the Kiso-horse really representative of old-fashioned military horses? How about those who discuss samurai war horses reconsider this?

Ruck On, Steve! This is a doozy of a kit, great detailed rider, and you're pushing right along, tougher kits as you go.

P.S. Thank you for the clarrification, Myouchin.

This thread seems to have been hijacked by certain people and turned into debate over horse breeds with some not so pleasant comments made towards Steve. Those concerned should take this discussion to another part of the forum and leave Steve to carry on his thread to show progress of his work for what this part of the forum is intended for.

Not at all and yes it is a discussion ( or ignorant discussion as you pointed out and referring to Steve as ridiculous!!!) but in the wrong section, should be a different thread NOT in someone’s WIP painting progress !!!

I was once the joint owner and run the PF forum as well as moderated/administrate it !!! Also someone who has a big input into the development and production of this piece... So who are you apart from someone who only ever seems to criticize but shows nothing of their own achievements if any? I do join in discussions when they are appropriately posted in the correct section and can be constructive without any mud slinging of other peoples work and perspective. Sort yourself out and grow up and learn how to use a forum in the correct way.

I agree. While this type of discussion is interesting, it is clearly inappropriate to have it here. No one is entitled to force strange obligations and responsibilities on others in the hobby. Steve Brodie has a right to enjoy his hobby.

I AM A MODERATOR ........and remind everyone to keep to WIP subject , if anyone wishes to discuss the kiso start another thread ...I suggest in the references forum Uniform Reference under J

All have the opportunity to report a comment rather than fill a thread with posts

I have moderated the thread to appropriate WIP comments

Let's all enjoy Steve's WIP and we all look forward to seeing your benchtime as well

Steve,I am a samurai enthusiast and student of everything related to them.I have more than a dozen objections against this piece ( I was waiting for it eagerly after seeing it in its first steps of creation by Nello and was thoroughly dissapointed when I saw it finished).Arms, armour, horse gear, horse breed all are quite inaccurate BUT that does not mean that you should not enjoy painting it.This is our hobby, our passtime, our therapy and most of all it should be FUN and a source of happiness.I am a NOTORIOUS RIVET COUNTER when it comes to samurai and I have engaged in heated debates many times with other great and knowledgable modellers here on PF but in private.
In conclusion,I would never choose to buy and paint this piece but I will follow your efforts and congratulate you on the outcome.Give it your best mate.
