Calling all Kiwis! Request for help with Te Moka designs

    Hi all,

I'm about to start painting Pegaso's 1/10 bust of a Maori.

Can anyone please direct me to any pictorial views that show the complete ta moko design on the front, left side AND right side of the face and neck of the SAME individual? I've searched the web but have so far found no photos that show the three views of the same person.

Ideally, this resource would have this info for several individuals so I could choose a design within my comfort range.

The visuals need not show only historical subjects; modern subjects will do, providing that they are authentic to the traditions and customs of Maori culture.

Thanks in advance for the help.

    Cheers,
    Brian

I think (as your finding out) that its hard to find examples of three different views of an individual. My approach would be to find a face with a tattoo on you like and go from there. It shouldn't be too hard as the tattoo' are all based on symmetry.

    Hi Brian
Ron is correct mate - it is Ta Moko you are after.
A very good resource is here:

I’ve collected a few images here:

Be aware these are very special for each warrior charting there personal story. There are sacred traditions behind them so would recommend doing something general & modern rather than a specific individual given the bust is a more generic, though beautiful study by Michel Saez.
Trust this helps mate & look forward to seeing your version.

Prop Blast, Andrew, Ron and Mike,

Thanks everyone for the helpful input. Clearly, your advice was much needed (I couldn't even get the spelling correct on the term "Ta moko" - embarassing!) and much appreciated.

I definitely want to keep the design accurate-looking but to also be respectful of a cultural tradition that is not my own; the advice and visuals you have generously provided will go a long way to helping me settle on a design that I hope will accomplish both goals.

I'll try choosing a more generic modern design from amongst the ones you have suggested. I'll try to post sbs shots as I go so please keep me on track though, if I stray towards something inauthentic or potentially disrespectful.

    Thanks again for the help,

    Brian
