We can't let this part of history slip down the memory hole, too much was sacrificed. I'll be watching "The longest day" and "Saving Pvt Ryan" for starters.

Well, that donkey behind we got didn't say anything till after 8pm last night!

You ask today's youth about D-Day and most are clueless. At least I can say that my kids and granddaughter are fully aware and appreciative of the sacrifices that were made on that day.

I watched "The Longest Day" last night, too. I'll either watch the movie or reread Ryan's book, depending on time. My Midway observation usually runs into my D-Day observation, because I reread Walter Lord's "Incredible Victory" and Parshall & Tully's "Shattered Sword".

    Prost!

It's probably no consolation, but most of today's youth is clueless about just about everything, not just D-Day.
If humanity lasts long enough, I think they're the ones who eventually become the Eloi from "The Time Machine".

    Prost!

Yep, we homeschooled all of our kids and now our grandkids, they know, too.

As a followup, I did wind up rereading "The Longest Day," too. It's actually a fast read, and I started and finished it Tuesday, reading straight through. But then, I enjoy Ryan's books. Walter Lord's books, too. I like to read the accounts of people who lived through the events.

    Prost!

Jumping in a bit late to this discussion, but here are my 2 cents:

My grandfather was liberated from Dachau by the Americans, so I have a very personal debt to those who landed that day.
And if you want something from a bit different angle about sacrifice, I just happened to read yesterday a short story by J.D. Salinger: "For Esme with love and squalor". Don't know why, it left me a bit tearing.

I'm so glad that when I grew up, the boy scouts still taught kids how to make a shelter, how to make a fire, and how to use a knife and an ax. I also learned how to prep a chicken or rabbit.

Today's kids will die within a week of the shop running out of food.
