Some new work on the bench

    Evening all
I realised that I've been beavering away on stuff and not been posting so here's what is currently on the bench (We'll ignore the couple of other pieces which I've been working on that have slipped further back) ;)

First up Altores fine 54mm 'Geronimo' figure.
This one's now in primer and ready for some paint. Lovely kit with a beautiful horse although the figure doesn't capture Geronimo's pugnacious visage very well IMO it's a fabulous face full of expression that will paint up well methinks. Can't remember needing to do much on this figure other than the usual bits and pieces such as extra detail on teh inside of the tail and where the figure joins the horse.:)
    Apache Front.jpg Apache back.jpg

Next up is a second Native American from Altores again in 54mm. This one has morphed a few times over the last couple of months. Originally on a rearing horse I ditched that for a modified Historex job with a new mane, tail and some feathers all from Duro or MS/Duro mix. I had intended to have him waving a buffalo skin, but shortly after resculpting the hand/arm and buffalo robe I came across another figure already made in the same pose which rather took the wind from my sails :meh: So this one was slid to the back of the bench whilst I worked on the Apache. I then had a closer look and another think and decided to keep the horse and the idea of signaling, but using his spear and shield instead.
Since I wanted to change the figures tribe to a Blackfoot (It's sold by Altores as a Cheyenne) I had to change the costume so out went the chest guard and details of the headdress/leggings and whilst I was doing that I decided two shouting figures at the same time was one too many. I couldn't find a suitable head so picked one from the spares box (Figurinitaly?) and altered the features so that he had the more pronounced cheekbones and a larger nose typical of plains warrior. This was done with MS putty and my bestest close up lens!
(Not sure whether the changes are very apparent in the close up so you may just have take my word for it):D

Feathers poved a bit of stumbling block for a while and involved a few abortive attempts. I eventually settled on a spine of 5amp fuse wire in a Duro feather. This was sculpted out of a blob that was big enough to handle and then sliced off when dry and the back of the feather was sculpted. Waaaaaay overscale I appreciate, but you've got to make the effort.

    Feather 1.jpg Feather 2.jpg

The rest of the details (Plats, beads, necklace, new shield etc.) were added all of which was made slightly more difficult because I'd assembled the figure completely already:rolleyes:
Anyway he's nearly ready for primer now so it'll be good to start getting some paint on them at last

ps - The other figure which arrived on the bench this week is a 'favour' for a mate who'd like this chappie painting up. Scale is about 12th I'd guess and he arrived primed and ready to go :p

Man, making those feathers does look frustrating. Looks good from here!

Good on you Paul, for perseverance. I have had two figures sat on my shelf of shame, because I ran out of mojo halfway through the conversion. This may just spur me back on.

Once I've finished my other current projects..:-/

Exceptional work so far.Totally love it.Indians are not my thing with the sole exception of the Apache so this Altores Masterpiece is in my GA too waiting its turn.I will follow your painting for inspiration.

    Oda.

PS: As you seem to know quite a bit on the subject I have a question to ask,is the omission of a saddle girth on the Apache correct?I mean although he is riding using just a blanket shouldn't there be some form of girth securing it on the horse?

:ROFLMAO: You don't want to know how many ended up in the bin. Glad you like it Steve

    Thanks Scott :D

    Cheers Franck (y)

Hiya Henk. Yep stubborness is sometimes needed as much as technique to see a project through to the cabinet. I leave them on the shelf for a while and then move on, but sometimes it's worth revisting them to see if you can get re-inspired :)

Thanks Oda. The Apache is a cracking figure I'm sure you'll have fun with yours (y)

Girth straps are used sometimes these days, but drawings and photos of the period don't seem to show them. Certainly Plains warriors were riding bareback from a very early age so devloped a natural seat on a horse and were consumate horsemen. I've never riden bareback with a blanket so can't be definitive, but it would be easy to add a strap.

    Cheers for now

    Hiya Busty. :)
Seem to have been spending a lot of time without getting anywhere, but sometimes that's the way it goes. Yep, I do love the North American tribes - There's plenty of inspiration in the paintings of McCarthy and Terpning (Whos work I absolutely love)

    It's only a little bust . . . :ROFLMAO::sorry:
Yep, cast in resin and although quite simple by the current standard it should paint up nicely. I've even got some references of the chappie he'd like it to represent. (Note the 'saint' logo on the mae west)

Well Paul, very productive. Yep love the two Native American's and the feathers are frustrating, I always have the green stuff stuck to my hand and on the carpet when I drop some ( grateful the wife doesn't read this).
    Following this one Paul.

Might need to wait a wee while to see them since I'm halfway through a 72nd Fokker Tripe (although I did make a start on the bust earlier today whilst waiting for other stuff to dry)

Managed to squeeze a bit of time in over the last week to make some progress with the first of these mounted figures :D

Here's a sneak peek of how things are shaping up so far. Still detail work to do on both rider and mount, but hopefully you'll get an idea of where we're heading

    Cheers for now

 Thank you Oda I'm very flattered - It's a very nice figure and the horse is one of the few I've seen that didn't need any work; it's a beautiful piece of sculpting

    Hi Leggy

That's a real nice horse colour you've got there , like the way you've done the colouring on the legs

Riders coming along well , like the muscles on him

    Look forward to seeing more
