1. Copying kits is a crime that hurts original artists & producers. Help support your favorite artists by buying their original works. PlanetFigure will not tolerate any activities related to recasting, and will report recasters to authorities. Thank you for your support!

So what's worse...?

First of all I'm not a fan of computer generated busts or figures. But I'm also not a fan of recasts. But I must say at this time I'm scared shitless to give my opinion. What you think? and your reasoning.

I don't understand your question...3d prints are here to stay. They have good and bad points, but clearly the coming thing and I agree that hand sculpted pieces have more character. Just don't get the recast comparison...those people suck. Not the same thing.

Difficult to give an opinion on a question that doesn't make sense, looks like you gave two opinions, you don't like recasts or 3d printing.

Happen to agree with you, Wayne. Computer generated stuff seems somehow like
cheating. I'm sure it's not really - it just takes a different set of skills... recasting is
most definitely cheating and must be stopped. As for expressing an opinion here
....well...what's to be scared of ? People will agree with you or not....and if they
become abusive just tell 'em to Foxtrot Oscar (to put it politely)...right?

    Hi Wayne

3D is another tool for sculptors to use , thankfully we still have traditional sculptors upcoming just look at what Mujin Park does and what Carl Reid and others have done

STL files are also now being offered for those with their own printer

3D sculpting is getting better all the time. Especially when you find traditional sculptors applying their knowledge of sculpting to it. There are even some mixing the two formats with good results, and not just on the fantasy side either. FeR have a couple of WWII German busts where the sculptor used 3D for the hard items like helmets and binoculars, and traditional for cloth and skin.

3D printing has been improving too but most people printing from home seem to be fine with print lines. I'm not so I much prefer a cast retail copy where the original master has been printed by someone who seriously knows what they're doing.

As for recasts, recasters, and those who support recasting by buying from recasters (even old, OOP stuff)... they don't really support the hobby community, companies, sculptors, concept artist and so on so frankly can get [censored].

Some artists are able to pull off a good effort with 3D but it’s rare in my opinion. I’ve only seen a couple that compare to hand sculpting. It seems to be a problem exclusive to historicals with the computer generation taking the humanity out of subject. I’m also sure we’ve all seen annoying stuff like perfectly symmetrical chain mail. This is a reason I’m less worried about historicals getting killed by 3D printing.

I came across a curious situation recently on one of the Facebook groups I'm on. A guy posted a picture of the Laurel and Hardy bust set that he said he had printed at home from a legitimate STL file that he had bought. I questioned him over this as Scale75 are still selling the pair as their own. After some discussion and research it would appear that the original sculptor made the files freely available on the internet shortly after Scale75 started selling the "genuine" article. Apparently this is quite a widespread practice. To me that leaves a grey area as to what is a recaste or a genuine original. For example if I buy that pair of a guy on eBay in a plain box for half the price of the Scale75 item am I buying a recast knock off or not. How am I to know if the original sculptor has made the file available after doing a deal with a company like scale75?

I know that exact conversation and who found those links too lol.

It isn't too common that the sculptor will sell an STL file after selling reproduction and sales rights to a company, but I know Scale75 have been pulled up for things before so who knows what went on between them.

I've seen a few companies, more on the fantasy side, which have sold a few casting runs before making the STL files available for purchase. RobotRocket with CA Studio, and Abyssoul are ones which come to mind. Though some have even given resin cast and STL options during a Kickstarter. Who knows where things will head.

I'll address first your comment about being afraid to give your opinion-don't be afraid. If you have an opinion, give it, and be ready to defend it, if someone engages you in legitimate discussion like an adult. If someone just calls you names or growls, don't sink to his level. But don't let him discourage you from saying what you think.

As far as 3D design and printing go, I don't mind the technology. I know it's not the same as sculpting by hand, but it is a different set of skills that take effort and practice to master. The technology is revolutionizing scale modeling, as I knew it would when I first saw the Makerbot printer about 10 years ago. I think we're heading to a time in which the average modeler will have a printer, and most subjects will be available as files, instead of molded products, and the modeler will print the item himself. I can see manufacturers adopting such a process, to save on the cost of developing the tooling, the cost of the materials, the cost of packaging and shipping. I can see, too, that the manufacturer or author, might include some kind of mechanism to license the file, just like other software. So your price includes the right to print 1 copy, or maybe you can pay for more. It wouldn't eliminate piracy, just as licensing doesn't eliminate it now, but it helps establish whose intellectual property it is.

And yes, 3D design and printing do make piracy easier. The problem with piracy and technology isn't the technology, it's the willingness of pirates to copy licensed work and sell it, and the willingness to buy, or ignorance of the piracy, on the part of consumers. Not a reason to get mad at the technology itself.

    Prost!

In reality the only thing that's worse "in this ever changing world" is losing your motivation to" continue to use your creativity and desire to paint miniatures." No fancy bullshit. It's all about the hobby of painting miniatures and I don't really care where it comes from. I'm not out for show and tell. After all, Isn't it all just for fun. You like a coloring book and you like to color you buy it. Suck it up...you're not going to change it. Every things a copy in some form or another. I just do not like computer generated work that the human hand hasn't originated ...To me , It's as simple as that.

    buns up!

Wayne in your first post you say "I'm not a fan of computer generated busts or figures. But I'm also not a fan of recasts". Then in that last post you say "I don't really care where it comes from ..... I just do not like computer generated work that the human hand hasn't originated". I'm not trying to be funny but you seem to be sending out mixed messages and I'm not quite sure what point it is you're trying to make. I'm sure that you know what you mean but I'm genuinely a tad confused. It's the "I don't really care where it comes from" bit that's thrown me.

Why would you even admit to that. Seriously!!! Choosing to watch an Adele concert. That's almost as low as supporting recasting.
