This figure is based on Miniart's 1/16 figure of Manfred von Richthofen. As he was depicted wearing a basic cavalry uniform I decided to try and convert him into a Uhlan on trench duty, as per these reference photos:

The head and helmet are by Jon Smith. The face is the first I've managed to paint by this manufacturer - this one had some strange creases on the right side which only resolved themselves when I gave him a scar, which at least adds character. The helmet is a standard pickelhaube to which I added a superstructure made from spare plastic and filler.

The rest of the equipment is a combination of Kirin, Dragon, Tamiya and Verlinden parts, and the bayonet is scratch-built.

This is not intended to depict the member of a particular regiment at a specific time or place, rather it's a generic Uhlan with a theoretical uniform/equipment combination.

Lovely subject out of the ordinary. The scarface gives an extra touch to the figure. Beautiful conversion and (as usual) nice paintwork.

    Morning Peter

Nice work and an interesting conversion from the original kit.

Never heard of Jon Smith in 1/16, there are loads of interesting things on the website.

As I read your intro with the conversion from a flyer to a cavalryman, I thought of the Robert Duvall character in Apocalypse Now, with The Ride of the Valkyrie and the infamous line

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning"

That would be an interesting conversion, Vietnam fatigues with a 7th Cavalry hat.

Have fun with the next victim

    Regards

    Hi Peter

Really good use of the original figure and the spares box resulting in a individual piece

Another nice painting and good to hear you enjoyed it

Steve - Thanks. Jon Smith do a nice range of 120mm figures, but they are a little too expensive for me. I believe also that there a few Kilgore figures out there - Mitches do him as a V bust. Progress has slowed due to the presence of my granddaughter, who has been helping Grandad mark up his Miniart Roman instructions; ''There's a one Grandad, now lets find number two...''

    Nap - Cheers.

Would have been so easy .... ( remember, they are more than 1200 makers still on the market, sometimes with strange webb adresses )

Michel - Not quite sure what you're getting at, but glad you like him.

    Carl - Very many thanks.

I've since done some refinements to the drapery:

    I'll leave it alone now.
