    Oans, zwoa gsuffa...!

On September 27, 1589, the Bavarian Duke Wilhelm V. ...

... orders the construction of the Munich Hofbräuhaus.

His Highness is by no means thinking of the entertainment venue for the population that the house represents today.

Rather, he is tired of having to import the "poor people drink" beer from Einbeck in northern Germany (Lower Saxony) for his court and especially its servants for heavy money, and so the Bölkstoff should - according to Einbeck's recipe! - to be produced on site in the future - from which the name "Hofbäuhaus" goes back.

Tschä, dear Bavarians, you owe your famous beer culture to North German development aid ...!

The building - the so-called "white Hofbäuhaus" stood in today's Sparkassenstrasse ...

... was torn down in 1896/97 and replaced by today's Hofbräuhaus.

The now world-famous temple for the boozing masses is an ordinance of the Bavarian King Ludwig I.

    ...Thanks to!
HisMajesty ordered the so-called "Gastung" in 1828:
From then on it was allowed to entertain the population in the Hofbräuhaus. In 1844 he set the beer price well below the usual level at the time in order to "offer the military and the working class a healthy and cheap drink."

The beer was still brewed there ...:

With the increasing tourism in Munich, the Hofbräuhaus enjoyed increasing popularity, so that Prince Regent Luitpold ...

... In 1896 the decision was made to move the brewery to Innere Wiener Straße am Gasteig in the Haidhausen district (where the Hofbräukeller is now located) and to have the guest area of the Hofbräuhaus greatly enlarged and rebuilt in the neo-renaissance style.

The planning was carried out by the architect Max Littmann and the renovation was carried out in two stages by Heilmann & Littmann, a company founded together with his father-in-law Jakob Heilmann.

The last beer was boiled on the Platzl on May 22, 1896, on August 10, 1896 the new brewery in Haidhausen started operations, on September 2, 1896 the demolition of the old brewhouse began, and from February 9, 1897 onwards the newly built "Schwemme" there is in operation.

But that was still too small, the masses wanted to drink!

Now the neighboring administration building has been demolished and replaced by a large restaurant area. On September 22nd, 1897, the Hofbräuhaus was ceremoniously opened in its new form, which largely corresponds to today's. The cost of the renovation amounted to 819,000 gold marks.

The Hofbäuhaus even made history twice!

On April 13, 1919, workers 'and soldiers' councils at the Hofbräuhaus proclaimed the short-lived Communist Bavarian Council Republic ...:

After the communists came the Nazis:

On February 24, 1920, the National Socialist German Workers' Party (NSDAP) was founded at the Hofbräuhaus in front of about 2,000 people ...:

It was renamed from the German Workers' Party. When it was founded, Adolf Hitler announced the 25-point program, the party program of the NSDAP.

Well - it ended in a pretty bloody way, as we know.

Today come - almost unbelievable! - Up to 35,000 visitors EVERY DAY to the Hofbäuhaus and drown the tenant a nice turnover as well as the Bavarian state annual income in the tens of millions ...:

Today (September 2021) the once "healthy and cheap drink" for "the working class" costs 9.60 euros for a "Mass" (1 liter of special thin beer!). Times change...!

    Oh yes:

And because it is too expensive for many US-Americans to jet across the Atlantic to slam their turnip the Bavarian way, they simply built a copy at Las Vegas ...:

There is also a copy in Newport, Kentucky, which I visited back in 2017. It was nice, but I am in no way knowledgeable enough to judge German food and alcohol :)

    Cheers,

Good post! We went there once in the eighties. It was heaving, noisy, smelled of beer and wurst but it was brilliant. Wasn't keen on "blonde" beer until then. Now I prefer it to the weird swill they call "real ale" over here.
    As Brad says - prost!!

    Prost everyone!
    Great article!
There is also a Hofbräuhaus in the beautiful old town of Regensburg. Its not so much an "event" place like the one in munich, more relaxed and a place to get to know real bavarian Wirtshauskultur. Whenever i am downtown i stop for a "Halbe Bier". Whenever someone is visiting Regensburg should visit the place.
    Prost from Regensburg!
