Anybody old enough to remember eight track tapes. Cruising along after bar hoping and listening to Iron Butterfly and that familiar stop in the music until the track kicked over and we continued to bob our heads to the music. Those were the days......Yes, I'm a geezer......But I still remember.....

A mate's family had one when we were kids. I thought they was right posh having something so hi-tech. My family still had a 'stereogram'.

I remember them from when I was a kid, but they were something that only "rich kids' " Dads had (along with colour TVs).

In fact it was years before we even had a bog-standard radio in the family car (by which time 8-track cartridges had been superseded by cassettes anyway). And it wasn't until the late '80s that I had my own cassette player in my own first car, at which point I really thought I'd "arrived", tooling around in my red Ford Fiesta with boom-box speakers on the back parcel shelf .

Is that one of these? We called them "radiograms" over here, and my Dad had one very similar to this, it was his pride & joy and many was the time I was woken on a Sunday morning to Johnny Mathis or Andy Williams blaring out from it, or Manuel & His Music Of The Mountains. And eventually he went all Glenn Campbell and Kenny Rodgers on us.

Radiograms....Maybe we did too in Glasgow and I've been Canadian-ised over the last 40 odd years:p My auld man was a jazz musician, so it was Davis, Coltrane, Basie, etc. And I think we had the first colour TV on the street, probably around 1969/70. Even though most shows were still broadcast in B/W, all the kids would pile into our house just to watch the colour testcard on the BBC2:LOL: .

I bought a car with an 8-track in it - no tapes, and they were like rocking-horse poo by then so I outed it and put a casette in. Then - I sold the caro_O. My gran had the first TV in the family - a 9" Pye. Poignantly, I remember watching the Coronation on it - at least ten of us crowded into her tiny parlour squinting at these fuzzy images. My aunt had a radiogram - her taste in music was worse than Steve's dad's:LOL:

My first 8 track tape was Led Zeppelin's second album. It made my 72 Dodge Charger go at least 20 miles an hour faster

The 8 tracks was at the beginning for profesionnal use ( like jingles players at radio station )
The first all public was the normal casette by Philips ( developped in a factory inBelgium ) in 1963, the all public 8 tracks came in 1964 and had success for 90% of the production in USA, UK and Canada

The big diference is that in 8 tracks the spools where atop each . In the Philips casette they were on the same plane ( also a deposited model )

By the way the laser technology ( video and audio ) was also developped by Philips in another Belgian factory . In both case the license for both was free access to all makers for the players ( not the support ) insuring a worldwide distribution .
I know the american will say Laser Disc is Magnavox ...
Magnavox was subsediary to Philips and the first run were made in Hasselt ( Belgium )

All very interesting info regarding 8 track tapes. But still back when I was a kid; being able play "your" music and cruise in own car is the best of memories for me......

Yup, there I was, 18 years old and had been in the Army only a few months. Went to the Chevrolet dealer and bought me a brand new Camaro, then to a stereo shop and had a Muntz 8 Track player put in. America, The Moody Blues, Led Zeppelin,.....man, life was good! :)
