Never easy is it Dolf but the memories are precious and yes, they do give unconditional love that enriches our lives beyond anything else.

Happy memories Dolf! Like you say, it is sad that they have such short lives.

Graham, that is an excellent photo of your two Labs.

"A comfortable life with lots of love is all they want, eh?"

    Absolutely, Phil (y)

Sadly there are so many abused animals all over the world (and people as well...), and abused by people, that it's often hard to understand how we call ourselves the "top of creation" on this planet... :(

One of my favorite YT channels is this one (list of videos) :

    https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCINb0wqPz-A0dV9nARjJlOQ/videos

They show cases of abused animals that one can only hardly imagine such cruelty is still possible in the XXIst century...

Fortunately there are also some very nice and committed people all around that do their best every single day to save and rescue as many animals as they can, so there's hope...

I won’t bore you with the hundreds that didn’t work Phil or the hundreds of cocktail sausages used to keep them focused :ROFLMAO:

Couldn't agree more Graham! At my age, and after having had animals all my life, I came to believe that they come to this planet/this life, to try to teach us things and feelings that sadly many humans can still not understand, and some will never will...

    Cheers!

Lol... My Snowy also knows quite a few foodie words, but I think "cheese" is probably her favorite... :joyful:

Coco lumps all the above into one word that is her favorite word...."treats". It's her favorite word.

A friend is a friend no matter how many legs they have got and each loss is devastating, but people who dont have animal friends do,nt understand this and say it,s only a cat or dog or whatever

I'm going through a bit of an extended illness and have been off work a couple months, probably a couple more after next surgery. This little Terrier has been my one bright spot lately. Sticks to me like glue and entertains me with her antics. And she's ALWAYS in a good mood which we all know can be contagious.

Lol... I forgot about that one word! Not sure anymore if Snowy's favorite is "cheese" (that she loves) or "treats" :joyful:
Guess that for her "cheese" and "treats" are probably kind of synonyms :p

    Sorry to hear about that!
Wish you a fast and full recovery!

I believe they somehow know when we are in need, when we are sick, and they do their best to help us and give us the comfort we need.

Yes, I know what you mean by "always in good mood"! I suppose it's just one of the reasons we call them our best friends ;)

She is a beautiful dog! :)

EDIT: Hadn't seen the pic of you two as Santa. What a lovely Santa she makes
    Thanks for posting that! (y)

Hope you don't mind I copy the image you posted, and pass it around to others, I find it really beautiful, and probably so true... (y)

    A Dog Named Beau.
    Jimmy Stewart.
    Beau.
He never came to me when I would call
Unless I had a tennis ball,
    Or he felt like it,
But mostly he didn't come at all.
    When he was young
    He never learned to heel
    Or sit or stay,
    He did things his way.
    Discipline was not his bag
But when you were with him things sure didn't drag.
He'd dig up a rosebush just to spite me,
And when I'd grab him, he'd turn and bite me.

He bit lots of folks from day to day,
The delivery boy was his favourite prey.
The gas man wouldn't read our meter,
He said we owned a real man-eater.
He set the house on fire
But the story's long to tell.
Suffice it to say that he survived
And the house survived as well.
On the evening walks, and Gloria took him,
He was always first out the door.
The Old One and I brought up the rear
    Because our bones were sore.

He would charge up the street with Mom hanging on,
What a beautiful pair they were!
And if it was still light and the tourists were out,
They created a bit of a stir.
But every once in a while, he would stop in his tracks
And with a frown on his face look around.
It was just to make sure that the Old One was there
And would follow him where he was bound.
We are early-to-bedders at our house--
I guess I'm the first to retire.
And as I'd leave the room he'd look at me
And get up from his place by the fire.

He knew where the tennis balls were upstairs,
And I'd give him one for a while.
He would push it under the bed with his nose
And I'd fish it out with a smile.
    And before very long
    He'd tire of the ball
And be asleep in his corner
    In no time at all.
And there were nights when I'd feel him
    Climb upon our bed
And lie between us, and I'd pat his head.

And there were nights when I'd feel this stare
And I'd wake up and he'd be sitting there
And I reach out my hand and stroke his hair.
And sometimes I'd feel him sigh
and I think I know the reason why.
He would wake up at night
And he would have this fear
Of the dark, of life, of lots of things,
And he'd be glad to have me near.
    And now he's dead.
And there are nights when I think I feel him
Climb upon our bed and lie between us,
    And I pat his head.
And there are nights when I think
I feel that stare, and I reach out my hand to stroke his hair,
    but he's not there.
Oh, how I wish that wasn't so,
I'll always love a dog named Beau.
Not the least hard thing to bear when they go from us, these quiet friends, is that they carry away with them so
many years of our own lives.

I remember him reading that poem on the "Tonight Show with Johnny Carson" when I was young. Good post.

It sounds like Beau was a Jack Russell....

Way up in the mountains of Colorado, I told her to watch for mountain lions. So she did.
