Must admit I am not too happy with this one. I am rubbish at detailing and fine lines so I knew it would be a struggle. I was going to strip and start again but I wouldn’t get it better until my skills improve so he can wait until such time I am able to get it better. Another interesting semi flat from Ken Farrar and my first Crimean subject.

Well painted but I,m sorry to point out you have painted his kilt in the Gordon tartan. The 93rd wear the Black Watch which has no yellow line.Sorry:(

Hello Graham --- for a first attempt at tartan you have a good hand. Somewhat envious of your line work. Sadly however the option of changing the heading to that of the 92nd The Gordon Highlanders will not work. The Gordon's have a different sporran --- 2 black tassels on a white sporran. Scottish Regimental uniforms are at times complex.
A good starting point is -> Regimental Tartans | Scottish Tartans Authority
Sorry! Still envious of the paint work on the kilt.

I think you've done a good job on the painting Graham, The red of the jacket is very well done as is the rest. (I am sure you can rescue the tartan).

I have changed the tartan so he can stay like this until I put him in the stripper bath if ever I get good enough to attempt this one again.

Accurate or not Graham the tartan looks good.

I reckon you should leave him as-is and get another one to paint up the same once you feel that your skills are at a level to do it the justice you think it deserves. Then compare the two. I've done that myself with a couple of pieces and it's a good way to gauge your progress as a painter.

Maybe just push the highlights & shading on the reds and the flesh a bit more next time.

Cheers a Steve. I can see the point of doing that but I would rather strip and repaint if it starts to bug me. Maybe just one for the back dark corner of the cupboard

Nice, tidy work Graham. As has been said, Scots Regiments are a minefield.
