Another Young Miniatures bust, this time, a German S-Boat crewman sculpted by Hiroyuki Ishii. I've painted a few other busts by this particular sculptor, so there is a good chance that this one will work out (famous last words).

    The box contents:

The usual high quality Youngs offering, beautifully sculpted and cast. Good to have the fiddly bits separate as well.

    The face:

Quite tricky to do as the features are fairly smooth. The cap and headphones have just been primed in black for now.

Many thanks for looking in people. I need to soften up some of the tonal transitions, but the face is basically there.

I have a handful of 1/10 busts from this company (trying to get 5 tankers to make a collection). This really jazzes me up for pulling one off the shelf.

Congratulations, as they say "if a good morning starts in the morning" surely the final result will certainly be another small work of art. ;)

Go for it Randy. I love Young's busts and always enjoy painting them. By the way, Mitches Military Models does a set of three Fury crew in this scale.

Thank you Pier. Well, a very red sunrise here over snowy fields - hope that bodes well.

    Morning Peter

Good to see your next piece and a cracking start too.

The palette will be quite grey if you follow the box art for the body.

The face looks good for a smooth sculpt.

The Alpine 1/35 heads are always very smooth in comparison with Hornet heads.

I guess you will need to glaze and stipple the transition to a highlight on a really smooth sculpt?

Warmer weather but high winds on the way.

You'll need to keep Joe well tethered walking out over the next few days

    Have fun with the paints

    Regards

    Morning Steve

I intend to enliven the palette a bit when painting the torso, just to increase the interest. The smoother features on the face meant a lot of tonal blending over a wider area, which I always find difficult. On to the headgear today and lots of small parts to add to the headphones. Windy here, but Joe's safe as he's still convalescing from knee injury, poor lad.

    Peter.

Hi Nap. Thanks for looking in. Glad you like him so far.

    The head is now finished:

I initially painted the cap in too light a tone, so I've re-worked it, darkening the colours and simplifying the detailing. I also had trouble getting the headphone 'bridge' to fit, and ended up having to break it in two and attach it in separate parts.

Nice work Peter. I think the cap looks good - it would fade a fair bit in use at sea. Following this one(y)

    Graham - Thank you.

    Nap - Thanks also.

Phil - The cap was very much lighter and didn't work, but darkening it has knocked it back fairly well. Trying to emulate the box art can get you into all sorts of trouble (as well as on the highway to nowhere).

Often the trouble with box-art is the quality of the photography. I know a lot of painters rely on it but at best it is only a guide, at worst a distraction.
