    Afternoon all

After watching a thread by Graham on painting some of these excellent flats I was tempted to give one a go. I never got my head around flats and I don't really know why, as I have always admired them, especially when painted by the top exponents of the genre.

This piece, sculpted by Ken Farrar of Mil-Mart and cast in grey-green resin, has excellent detail and I found it a very rewarding exercise. It is the first flat that I have painted in 50+ years of modelling but it won't be the last. For bust and round painters I would highly recommend having a go at one of these as a break from the usual routine - you will enjoy it I promise(y)

This is how it came out:
Flat 3.jpg still on backing card

Flat 1.jpg detail on traditional black background

Flat 2.jpg Full piece. I think it might look better on a paler backing?

Thanks Graham for putting me onto these, and thanks Ken - as Douglas McArthur once said.."I shall return"

Very nice Phil, that didn’t take you long  Excellent job on this lovely piece. Pop it into a small picture frame with a soft focus photo background and put it on the wall.

What did you paint with. It seems that allnthe flat painters use oil paints and I've never really understood why that was. Very nicely done though.

    Hi Ken, many thanks

Painted in Vallejo acrylics. I had considered doing it in oils but I thought I'd try water-based. I guess flat painters traditionally use oils as flats have been around a lot longer than acrylic paint. Oils also blend much easier.

Thanks Graham. Once I'd started it, I couldn't put it down. I have a nice frame so I'll put it on display. The wife likes it, which is a bonus. She even said "you should do some more of these". Gobsmacked, was I?

You need to get Beauty and the Beast from Ken. Needs mounting on black card the way it’s done but it is a gorgeous piece and Mrs Phil will love it:D

Thanks Ken, I appreciate that. I did enjoy painting it and learned a lot in the process, chief of which was - I should have got my head around flats a lot sooner!
