Any of the German WW2 titles in the Osprey Men-At-Arms series would be good, Bryan - have a look at the Osprey Publishing website, or Amazon or AbeBooks.
Most Osprey titles can be had relatively cheaply either secondhand or sometimes new from the latter 2 sites. Just have a look through the titles currently in print on Osprey's site, & decide which ones best suit what you want to paint.

    HTH & Good Luck,
    Chris.

    Hi Bryan,
I had this book once and it's excellent as all the uniforms depicted are from real uniforms in colour photo's. If it's non SS you are going for there will be other titles covering the Heer. If this is your area it might be worth investing in a couple of good reference books although some are pricey. Try Naval and Military Press as a starting point.
    cheers

Check out this one German Army Uniforms and Insignia by Brian L. Davis. I have it and it covers a lot of uniforms used.

I have all of those and they are outstanding references. If you really want to get you wife upset with and get banished to the model room order the three volumes from this series

    Bryan,

If you’re looking to paint, best to use photographic reference; best way to get it cheaply? eBay and military auction sites! I keep an eye out for items that will have variations in colouring; uniforms particularly German ones varied in colour and quality as the War progressed, add to that wear and tear, number of times washed (not many dyes were colourfast), etc.

Last week I came across an experimental one piece US Tanker’s helmet I’d never heard of or seen before, saved the images as I don’t need to pay over $530 just to have the reference!

I do have an extensive reference library that I’ve accumulated over 40 years in the hobby; but there gets to a point one can only buy x number of books before the shelves threaten to collapse!

    Regards,

    Gary
