    Great refs... as said, Japanese mail is tiny compared with western style... just look at the photos with a hand in then.

    From what I've read, much existed mainly to hold the metal plates in place (eg on the sleeves/kote, where internal padding also provided protection) and, especially in the later period, was often decorative rather than functional.

    All mail armour (kusari) was of course an exception:

    I have an idea of how to make a chain mail. I made a 3D model the size of a kote, I will not give it to print. Then you can use it to make a shape and cast it from Smooth cast. After that, I think to cut off the chain mail with a knife from the base and glue it to the master model of the samurai. If I have results, I will show them

    I've seen those texture plates for doing mail, but none seem suitable for Japanese armour so I'll be interested to see how this works (not that I have a 3D printer).

    Sculpting at any scale is a true gift but the amount of detail that you have crammed into this subject is totally amazing so its going to be real popular when finished, plenty of scope for the painters.
