Roman Draconarius, III c. AD

From the range of Alexandros models, I have chose this excellent bust, sculpted by Adriano Laruccia. Depictes a roman draconarius of the cavalry. The draconarius was the signifer who bore a cavalry standard known as a "draco" in the Roman army. From the conquered Dacians, the Romans in Trajan's time borrowed the dragon ensign which became the standard of the cohort as the eagle was that of the legion. Of Dacian, Sarmatian in origin, the draco was later generally introduced in the fourth century as a Roman standard. It consisted of a bronze dragon head with a fabric body similar in shape to a tail behind it. Wind flowed through the gaping mouth and billowed out the cloth tail much like a modern windsock. It is thought that some form of whistle was mounted in the dragon's neck to make a terrifying noise when galloping.

The bust is painted it in oils over enamels. The old fahioned way... ;) Its painting, was a real joy for me. I tried to give the expression of a tired soldier and at the same time the roman self confidence and brutality, combined together, as more realistic as possible. Another challenge was the depiction of the armor and the several reflections of the colors surrunding the draconarious (mainly the draco tail and stick).
I hope you like the result.

A true artist my friend, the subtle use of colour is outstanding especially in the metals.

Always a pleasure to see your work...and learn from it.

Thank you Keith, for your kind and generous comment, that is more than welcome even I do not deserve it. For sure I am not and I do not feel an artist, at all... I always try to paint in a realistic and not fancy mode if is not dicated by the figure itself. Sometimes I paint in a detailed and carefull way, some othertime I paint offhanded... But, above all, I love historical miniature painting, as the majority of the fellow modellers.
    Thank you, one more time.

A super piece Theodoros and great painting. Great flesh work and treatment of the different textures. I don’t know whether it’s part of the weathering on the helmet but it almost looks like a reflection of the flesh of his hand/colour of the pole onto the metal.
