Good afternoon friends! We have a replenishment in the line of busts. Another work of Sergey Zlobov. This time on a Japanese theme.

The facial features (as shown in the photos) are nothing remotely Japanese or Asiatic in appearance but rather, look Caucasian to me. I'm no expert on the Katana either but that looks too 'curved' to me as well ...sorry.

I'll pass on this bust. So many things are wrong.

So much wrong, particularly with the armour I'm afraid, that I'll also have to pass.

This kit also yet again exhibits one of my pet peeves, which is the belief among most sculptors that as early as the 13th Century the Japanese had developed some form of anti-gravity device that allowed their shoulder guards to simply stay suspended in mid-air with no visible means of support. Below are pictures of how the shoulder guards in fact attach to the armour, albeit from a later reproduction of an earlier armour style in the Tower Armouries. Note in particular the white bow of what I think should be deerskin which attaches to the centre

The knots are all wrong. The orange ones from the first picture are from my collection.

Thank you all guys for your comments and criticism, which is very important to us, so that in the future we can correct the shortcomings of the masters. This work will be sent to rework.

Mr. Zlobov is a very talented sculptor, but he was clearly having an "off day" when he came up with this one.

I know next to nothing about Samurai, but even I can see that it's all over the place.

Kudos though for taking the criticism on board and sending it back for a proper makeover.

Just had a look and agree with everything said.

To anyone modelling (or just interested in) Japanese armour this book by Trevor Absolon is well worth the investment (for the do body armour at least):
    https://ospreypublishing.com/samurai-armour

I got both the hard and e-copy (which is useful for zooming in on the details-see below): 2nd hand copies are also available on ebay etc.

Unfortunately the long awaited 2nd volume on helmets and other items is still awaited:
    https://www.booktopia.com.au/samurai-armour-trevor-absolon/book/9781472822871.html

They seem to have got as far as cover artwork but even Osprey can't give a publication date (tho' Amazon etc claim it was published 2017, this doesn't seem right).

UPDATE: according to Amazon USA Vol 2 @$60 is due March 19th 2025.... I think I'll wait for the TV adaptation ;)

Otherwise check out FELIX/YELLOWCAT's excellent postings on these pages, eg: https://www.planetfigure.com/threads/samurai-references.117984/

Now, whether Oda Nobunaga ever wore armour anything like the one modelled is moot (though there is an unproven belief that he wore a Portuguese inspired 'foreign armour). One that is ascribed to him is in the link below (and a conversation about him is here)
    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/5b/Oda_Nobunaga_armour.jpg

Here's some screen snips from the pdf version of Absolon's : the couple are along the lines of this fig (note the small sode/shoulder guards on the 2nd one: and the bullet proofing indentations on the 1st), the others show a 100% shot and 300/400% zoom in details- ideal for modelling.... note for instance the toggle arrangement on the shoulder fastenings and the brigandine style collar so typical of Japanese armour.

It is VERY refreshing and encouraging for those involved in the project to accept and consider the membership feedback in the constructive manner in which it was intended; it does them credit and shows how thing should be done rather than adopting the 'head in the sand' approach and pressing on regardless.

Something that does not sell isn't good either for the manufacturer nor their intended customers who (want) to support and buy these products.

I look forward to seeing this reworked.

Some more armour references. Illustrations are from the book The Samurai Armour Glossary by Ian Bottomley and David Thatcher.

Yellowcat mentioned The Samurai Armour Glossary by Ian Bottomley and David Thatcher.

It's available to be viewed and as a free (legit) download from Peter's Dropbox here:
    https://www.dropbox.com/s/fn7agpprc1lxej3/The+Samurai+Armour+Glossary+2013.pdf?dl=0

Or can be viewed online at Issu here:
    https://issuu.com/davethatcher/docs/the_samurai_armour_glossary_2013_v2

David's restoration site is also worth a visit: https://yoroi.uk/

He helps run this FB sitehere: https://www.facebook.com/groups/SellSamuraiArmourSwordsRegalia

    Other (amongst many) sites include:
    https://www.japanesearmorsociety.com/
    http://katchushi.com/index.html
    https://www.giuseppepiva.com/en/opere/antique-samurai-armor
    https://www.shogunart.com/
    https://nihontoart.com/
    https://www.yoroikabuto.com/samurai/#

Caveat emptor: those in the know suggest that there's an awful lot of fake 'samurai armour' around (both modern repro and later period masquerading as 'ancient' and mis-matched sets cobbled together from odds'n'sods).

Two of my favourite Samurai armour books by H Russell Robinson:
    The Armour Book in Honcho-Gunkiko
The Manufacture of Armour and Helmets in Sixteen Century Japan

    Good looking refs Felix (y)

I had a look online and they're real collectors items, likely to be pricey.... if you can get them at all :(

Funnily enough I recognise some of the illustrations and plates from the Honcho Gunkiko book from my old 1970s HMSO/Royal Armoury pamphlet... the first text on Japanese armour that I ever bought (it fired my interest).

This is a copy parts of the original: https://www.bakumatsuya.com/shop-description.php?ID=1560116960&La=E#here

    Yes Bill,

I found that one as well (plus few slightly cheaper ones- sold or poor condition though).

When I checked out Robinson's works I found one on Roman armour and the very HMSO one I bought all those years ago at the Tower of London (hence the use of the same illustrations I suppose):
