WIP RAF Pilot WW2 1/6th bust.

I received Gordon Mitchell's latest in the post this week, and I was really impressed with it. Cracking sculpting by Moz Corry with some lovely textures on the flying jacket and its wool lining. The pilot's face is just as you would expect with that of a newly passed pilot joining his first squadron.

Virtually any cleaning up is at the back of the one piece bust but I did drill out and shape the over nose leather piece on the goggles.

Now washed and primed waiting for some paint to be slapped on.

You know me Nap 3 busts is a large GA for me, I thought it would look better if it was drilled and shaped.

Just painted the eyes and waiting for the gloss varnish to dry before continuing with the face.

Nice lot of leather work with seams to play about with.

    Have a good weekend

Following along, as the postman dropped my parcel off this afternoon (a PITA to pick up as I cannot bend my back:mad:, will put a little table next to my door so it will be easier for me to pick up in future)

Welcome LH, hope your back problem is temporary and will be better soon.

Unfortunately the back problem will always remain a problem (is genetic malfunction, can only hope it does not get worse from now on).
Nonetheless we must keep getting up when falling down, or as the Chinese say: the only way to fail is by not getting up when you fall. Now listening to BB King praying Lucille

I painted the face flesh this morning in my usual Artist's oils after I had used acrylics yesterday evening to paint the eyes.

Just spotted a couple of things that need to be done before paint dries and to add the light spots to the eyes.

    That's it for today,

    Stay safe guys

Looking great. Geoff. Could I ask, how did you paint the goggle lenses?

Thank you Richard,, that is my mistake, I forgot the helmet colour was going to be a darker brown so will have to repaint the lenses.

I painted the lens area the finished leather colour, then darken the area around the inner padded area, when dry add the helmet seam lines. Next paint the lenses a very weak light grey wash with a flat brush and leave to dry, if it looks OK then no need to add another very thin coat. Next add a coat of gloss varnish with flat brush, leave to dry, then with a flat brush add some white paint extremely sparingly the the highlight area, DO NOT over do it, when dry gloss varnish again, Good luck.

Thanks Geoff, I arrived at a similar technique some time ago with a German ski trooper that I was working on at the time, a bit smaller scale then your bust though. Keep picking it up, looking at it and scratching my head, wondering if there was a better way (as you do). Am my own worst critic!

Neat Artist's oils applied, Burnt Sienna first,

    P1140491 (2).JPG

Then Vandyke Brown stippled over the still wet coat,

    P1140492 (2).JPG

    Followed by Burnt Umber,

    P1140493 (2).JPG P1140494 (2).JPG P1140495 (2).JPG

The seams were run along with a damp tip of a brush to remove most of the paint to show the stained undercoat.

Will now wait for all the coats to dry before continuing.

    Cheers
    Geoff
