Currently modelling another 1/35 Gallipoli diorama. I have now re-sculpted most the figures into New Zealander’s; need to tidy them a little, and a few details like collars before starting the painting process.

I’m using the Ion Brown painting as main composition reference; have included some additional images of the Kiwis in Gallipoli, including the Middle East to give you an idea of their look and equipment in WW1, note the older long Barrel Lee Enfield, issued due to shortage of the shorter SMLE.

British units that reached the summit of Chunuk Bair early on 8 August 1915 to engage the Turks were the Wellington Battalion of the New Zealand and Australian Division, 7th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, and 8th Battalion, Welch Regiment, both of the 13th (Western) Division. The troops were reinforced in the afternoon by two squads of the Auckland Mounted Rifles Regiment, also part of the New Zealand and Australian Division. The first troops on the summit were severely depleted by Ottoman return fire and were relieved at 10:30 pm on 8 August by the Otago Battalion (NZ), and the Wellington Mounted Rifles Regiment, New Zealand and Australian Division. The New Zealand troops were relieved by 8:00 pm on 9 August by the 6th Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, and 5th Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment, who were massacred and driven off the summit in the early morning of 10 August, by an Ottoman counter-attack led by Mustafa Kemal.

Figures put together from ICM/Miniart 1/35, re-sculpted using greenstuff/magic sculpt. Details from ICM with scratch built base.

This will be spectacular! I know it's based on the painting, but I'd feel better if someone were about to take down the charging Turk. Maybe the guy with the revolver - in a millisecond hot lead or cold steel? Either way, fantastic!

Thank you. I wanted to create the tension in the scene of the charging Turk about to strike the officer, an obvious target on the battlefield and him noticing out the corner of his eye. Unfortunately the soldier to his right has an overheated rifle so his comrade I’d giving him his weapon. Will it be too late.

Thanks mate, having fun with putty. One of these days I will create a full figure rather than converting. :)

Ace work again, Marcus - the amount of thought & planning you put into your vignettes & dioramas brings them to life even more.

Remade the rifles in the scene, a Frankenstein affair to create the Lee Enfield MLE from the front of the Ross rifle and rear of the SMLE with long bayonet cut and added all from the ICM WW1 British Soldier set.
The Kiwis were issued with the long barrel MLE at Gallipoli due to shortage of SMLEs for all the commonwealth troops.
Also made up some 1908 webbing to go in the scene, at Chunuk Bair it was recorded discarded kit lay everywhere in the frenzy of the battle.
