During 8th August 1915, the New Zealand Expeditionary Force (NZEF) of Wellington and Auckland fought a fierce battle; the Anzac’s ultimately failed to hold the newly captured heights of Chunuk Bair which overlooked the landing beaches at Gallipoli. It is recorded in history as a brave and heroic fight against the Turkish forces of the Ottoman Empire, sadly one of the greatest defeats for the Allies in the Great War.

I’ve started this new 1/35 scene depicting part of that battle, the diorama is very rough at the moment, but gives you an idea of the final composition.

Using a mix of 1/35 ICM, Miniart and spares box parts, the figures will be resculpted in Greenstuff/Magic Sculpt.

Based on the painting by Ion Brown.

    Hi Marcus

Thanks for posting this a great start , amazes hoŵ you can see all the bits and form them into the figures suitable for conversion

Will you add any more attacking troops ?

Even now you've captured the hell of the fighting

    Look forward to more updates

    Happy benchtime

Thanks mate, re adding more attacking soldiers. I thought about adding one more figure falling backwards on the slope however I don’t want him to detract from the scene depicting the defenders and not sure it would add anything to the story.

    will have a think.

    regards, M. :)

Simply amazing Marcus! I really admire the way you go about composing the diorama prior to completing each figure. It seems like perfect common sense, but too often planning takes a back seat to doing.

    Well done, (y)

Thanks Ken, we adjust physically to our environment so it makes sense to me to make the base then position the basic figures like a mannequin then lock the joints with superglue before filling and resculpting. It’s a time consuming process but I think you get more natural poses for a more authentic scene.

#ChunukBair added a new attacking Turkish soldier, and changed the officer’s head for some additional tension in the scene. At an early stage in the build, it’s a good idea to think how those in the scene relate to each other, and how they compliment the story.

The 1/35 figures are still rough at this stage, I go through a process of refinement and resculpting.

When photographed from ground level Marcus, this latest diorama takes on a whole different aspect - the action is such that you could almost smell the smoke & cordite.
Incredible work, even at this early stage.

Thank you, thats very kind. I do like to look at the composition for a long time refining it. The photos help me, if it’s annoying to my eye it has to be changed. I do appreciate it when people feed back, gives to confidence to continue. :)
