Wreck of SMS "Scharnhorst" found!

    It is an archaeological sensation!

    British researchers have reportedly discovered the sunk in the First World War German cruiser SMS "Scharnhorst" in the South Atlantic ...:

    And that's nearly the day exactly 105 years after their demise. The wreckage of the German warship had been located and photographed off the Falkland Islands, the Falklands Maritime Heritage Trust announced on 5 December 2019.

    On the first picture below you can see the stern of the ship with the two revolver guns on the port side and on the starboard side ...

    ... the next picture shows a cannon standing on the aft bridge ...:

    On December 8, 1914, at the beginning of World War I, the cruiser was sunk by the British Navy, after a by the German fleet chief Admiral Reichsgraf Maximilian von Spee ...

    ... planned action against the British naval base in the Falklands Islands had failed.

    All in all, the Schest ship of the "Scharnhorst", SMS "Gneisenau" as well as the small cruisers SMS "Nurnberg" and SMS "Leipzig" were sunk by far superior British naval forces...

    ... about 2200 soldiers died.

    Even the commander of the German squadron, Admiral Graf Spee and his two sons ...

    ...died in this battle.
