A wonderfully sculpted and painted figure in every way!

    But:

Are we experiencing the birth of a new kind of business model?
First use exclusively through a painting studio, which of course has paid for the rights, which saves development costs for "Pegaso"?

And only then, if enough was earned there, the ordinary customer - we figure friends - comes to the scene and can buy the figure as a kit and unpainted?

    Your opinion would interest me!

    Mine is:

If I'm right with this assumption, "Pegaso" shows what it's like with its long-standing customers who have remained loyal to the company and made it big and well known.

    Namely nothing!

    Hello Martin,

I would like to share some insights and my personal opinion with the scale models community. That's not a secret that even the biggest companies suffer from recasters. Their activities are especially harmful on the very first phase when a new figure has just come on the market. Once recasted in China, Russia or Ukraine, it is hardly going to return the development costs. As a painting studio, we get a lot of comments from manufacturers which can't normally plan neither their costs, nor income. What kind of business model is it?

If a company saves some time selling the figures safely, would you be too upset to wait for a while when a figure becomes available for sale as a kit? The company gets an opportunity to continue working and creating new models, and the modellers get a possibility to buy the figure in future anyway.

What is very ,very good news for me is that the unsurpassed master sculptor mr.Konnov is back again!!!!I sure do hope he remains active for some time more.As for the rest,Pegaso is in a downward spiral for quite some time now.Sparse releases, indifferent subjects ,irrational pricing etc.My gut feeling tells me that if it were not for Kimera,Pegaso would have already been out of business.Trying new business plans or schemes in order to save a company is not a bad or unethical movement, especially if a plan like that can help a company produce good miniatures and protect itself from recaster damage.I also know that the people of Attica Studio are definitely part of the healthiest core of the Russian miniature market. So if the move is beneficial to both partners,I do not see anything wrong with it.
I totally disagree with the choice of scale.Last thing this market needs is the "introduction"of one more scale, namely the gigantic 200mm.

I see where all of the comments above are coming from and can understand all the points of view expressed. I also agree with Oda in that Pegaso seem to have lost their way somewhat in recent years, so fair play to them for trying out new approaches (if that is what this is). And they have have dabbled in 200mm before, so it's not an entirely new scale for them.

It does seem a strange choice though, given that a piece that size painted to Attic's "Museum" standard will be beyond the pockets of most, and even their "Art" standard won't be cheap. So realistically it'll likely only be a relatively few well-off collectors who'll be shelling out for this, not Joe Average Figure Painter. On the other hand, maybe that alone could be enough for them to recoup their development & marketing costs and at least break even before they put it out on general release?

It is a splendid figure though, and if/when it is made available as a regular kit, I could definitely be tempted.

As a piece of art it is magnificent and a wonderful tribute to the sculptor, manufacturer, and the painter. Otherwise I can't
really see the point. I suspect many would love to have one, but few ( aside from some of our many 'city bandits' with their
annual bonus burning a hole in their pockets ) would be willing or able to pay what will obviously be a hefty price. I wish
    Attica well though.

The Kit of this figure was on sale at Kulmbach for 130 Euro - as a special show offer - telling that the retail price would be 160,30 Euro. The painted piece is on sale for 3.179 USD / 2.888 Euro at Attica shop. (After reading other members posts I rubbed my eyes and edited this post as I first misread the price of Attica shop.... and thought that 1.379 USD was already a lot of money:woot:)
I will not go any deeper about the sense of this but think that these informations might be useful for people considering to buy this kit.

Recasters are smart I think they will by the cheaper one :)
I would put the kit out now as it will be in China and Russia before you know it, if the kits has already been for sale!!

I really like 1/9, 200mm scale its a good scale for painting faces, not really a new scale given Warriors and Verlinden released a few back in their day

    Hi Tatiana!

Your point is certainly not to be dismissed.

However, this also means: The recaster problem is now being dumped a bit on the backs of honest customers, ie those who are least likely to do so.
    -------------------------------------

    Привет Татьяна!

Ваша точка зрения не должна быть отклонена.

Тем не менее, это также означает: проблема с восстановителем теперь немного сбрасывается со счетов честных клиентов, то есть тех, кто с наименьшей вероятностью это сделает.

EK Castings has released this beautiful mongol. It is in 75mm ( a rational scale),superbly cast with exceptional detail (although one must take the extra step of removing the glazelike patina in order for it to show through),historically accurate, comes only in three pieces (quiver and bowcase are the only separate pieces) and it's full of character and what is most important,it retails for less than 30 euros. So Pegaso people...sorry but you can keep your mongol out of the market as long as you want.No love lost!

    That's fine Oda .... but 75mm isn't 200 mm! And that's the point.

The EK figures does look nice, and the cast-on detail on his coat also gives guys like me who can't paint freehand worth a damn to cheat a bit and get some nice symmetrical patternage going on. I might even buy it. But that wouldn't stop me buying the Pegaso 200mmm offering as well, because that's a stunner in its own right.

As long as a figure offers me what I'm looking for in a figure, I'm less hung up about scale and I think it's great that we have so many choices.

I couldn't agree more with you Steve. Many options is always a must in life.I am just one of those modellers that place the bar at 120mm and consider larger scales a bit out of the scope (personal opinion not a rule). So a 75mm figure that meets my quality standards and does not lead me to the poorhouse is most acceptable. The only thing that is irresistable about Pegaso's "snobbish" giant is that little magical word "Konnov".I love this artist's style and his works. It was a very sad think for me that I could not see his name on any new release's box these last few years. As I have stated before,I surely do hope that this release marks his comeback.

    Is the above figure painted
    $3179.00 U.S????????????
  16. Oda A Fixture

Correction:1379 not 3179 $ but still extremely expensive.A master's work usually fetches such a high price.

Hmnnnn... the old premium vs penetration cost conundrum.

I don't know enough about the cost breakdown of figures* (ie master sculpting, mould making, casting, packaging, promotions, sales and distribution) but the basic issue is about balancing sales volume vs sales income to achieve break-even, then profit. The traditional options (as below) include premium and penetration (though this painted fig looks like ultra premium, just aiming for the very top of the market)

It strikes me that most manufacturers currently adopt a premium (high) price strategy, with some creating short supply (and hence high desirability) by limiting the number of items cast. This has three effects: first it limits the potential market to those able (and willing) to pay a premium price; second, in doing so it encourages re-casters to 'fill the gap' with lower cost/quality clones; thirdly, high unit contributions means that break-even, then profit, is achieved with low unit sales.

Adopting a penetration strategy, with lower prices and larger runs might: open the market to a wider range or customers (both able and willing to pay a lower price**); discourage re-casters as the margins would not be as large; low unit contribution, but still allowing B/E and eventual profit but across a larger number of sales.

Well, of course this is all theory, but the existence and presumably success of re-casters seems to suggest that there's a ready market for lower priced figures*** and the mathematical fact remains that you can make the same (and potentially more) profit by selling more at a lower price as fewer at a higher one (see below).

    P-PSs.JPG P-BE.JPG

*can anyone give us an idea of these?

** here are a few comparisons of the prices for recasts ( SELLER DELETED - Nap ) vs original busts (most are ex P&P):
    • Berdan Sharpshooter: £14.68 inc P&P vs £35 (Mitches Models)
    • FAM Indian Scout: £14.68 inc P&P vs £45.76 (el Greco)
    • Pegaso Save the Tambourine!:E18.24 vs E54.90 (Pegaso)
    • Young Mins 92nd Highlander: £9.91 inc P&P vs £39.99 (SK eBay)
    • Andrea After the Battle: E11.37+2.95 vs E43 (Andrea: metal)
    • no original manufacturers were harmed in the making of this table (mind you, they are tempting-notably the 92nd Highlander!)
The prices generally seem to be c30-40% of the originals. Not having relatively expensive packaging (fancy wooden boxes, tins etc) no doubt also allows them to keep costs down.

*** including me: I can afford the prices but am loathe to pay them

I just think of how many Rosengrant figures I could find and buy if I had a spare
3179 U.S laying around...………….Warriors, S&T and Alpine ( Pegaso German Paratrooper and 101st) all 200mm:) might even have some money left over for some Jeff Shui's 200mm figure delights
