Stormtroopers French Revolutionary - Uniform colors?

Discussion in 'vBench (Works in Progress)' started by Magnus, Aug 23, 2019.

Hi! Started slowly on the light side of the face on this cool 1/6 bust sculpted by Carl Reid for Stormtroopers. But I feel very insecure about the uniform colors, seems to be so many variations :) Guess the breast should be white, the coat blue with red trimmings? For the cockade I have seen many variations, for example from outside to center: Red, blue, white or white, red, white, blue, white or grayish, blue, red, white. For the bands across the cockade I have seen gold, black or yellowish white. What colors could the shoulder lapels be? Seems like a jungle to me :D Many questions but any help will be highly appreciated.

The original painting by Detaille which inspired this bust, shows him to be an artilleryman:- all dark blue with red piping to the collar, epaulettes and lapels. His headscarf is also a dark red, which is how I've portrayed him (sorry, can't post pictures:() Brass buttons. I would say the tricolour cockade is a matter of personal choice.
He can ,of course, be painted as an infantryman with white lapels to the coat, but I prefer to follow the original.
Someone, someday, ought to make the whole gun and team of five as a vignette.....it captures the fervour of the Revolutionary troops brilliantly.

I love the painterly style!!!!! It adds life and interest!

I sometimes think that when the pigments are too smoothly blended the result can look too controlled and lifeless.

This painting style suits the sculpt.

And yes, brilliant work on the eyes!

    Fantastic work.

The earlier 'painter-ish' face had lots of character but the final version is just superb (as is the belt... and the hat... and the uniform... and, well, just about everything really (y))
