falklands para 002.JPG falklands para 001.JPG Dear Figure Friends.
Am slowly starting to back into figures.I seem to remember back in the mists of time this figure was by Pete Morton under his Cadre miniatures range?.Nice chunky beast of a figure.I tried an oil stain over the Dpm to age the Acrylic Camo pattern.Ferris inspired me to try on this baby. The figure appears glossy as the oils are drying.I used Daler Rowney Van dyke brown for the oil stain on the figure.Probably have to end up matting down with Dullcoat maybe. Thanks for looking in guys.
    Happy modelling from Richard.

    Hi Richard

DPM is difficult to paint and I think you've made a great effort. Unfortunately I think the wash you've applied has changed the colour palette too much towards brown. The base colour for DPM should be a pale sand/ light khaki colour.

I am adding my two penneth here - I am looking at the wash you have gicven your figure and it looks like you have gone for a "wet" look - characteristic of the Falklands Campaign - either it was soaking wet or bloody cold or both!

The DPM I find is relatively easy to do - but I have done a ton of such figures...yours looks good. I'd be inclined have him standing in a sodden bog laden base. That will work with your wash.

    Hi Tony.
Thanks for your comments,Im not overly happy with the dark hue the oil stain produced.Might try a lighter shade next time.Im really a beginner at figures and so much to learn.I find camo colours difficult to age and i tried Acrylics on a face,Not good and ended up looking like a Tranny!!!.Cheers from Richard.

    Hi Adrian,
Thanks for your thoughts,As Tony stated the base Dpm colour is too brown so i might have to rethink the oil stain technique.Like you said i could make him wet and dirty in a bog etc.
    All the best from Richard.

There were a few choice words when i had to start from scratch once again.Keep thinking of trying Acrylics rather than my enamels and oils,Find it hard to make the camo look aged rather than stark bright colours.Tried using acrylics for face and was an abomination!!.Difficulty gauging the thinning of the acrylics when trying to do shading and highlighting.Maybe i should leave camo uniforms to later when i get more proficient with painting.Find my figure look messy and choppy painting and it gets very frustrating!!!. Richard./

I find acrylics for flesh all wrong - can't make them work but for camo I find it the best. But it means using lighter paints and darker paints to make the shadows and highlights. Then I have done like you and added a oil wash especially if my figure is to look rain soaked - but even just pin washes with oils on top of acrylics.

Cool - Aussie SAS are a must for me - particularly the Viet Nam era - I just got a couple of Naked Army figures. I met a couple of Brits SAS who went to Viet Nam under the Aussie umbrella.
You are right about this site - it is not populated by 12 year olds (*r*tmodeller!) - everyone is helpful here.
