this figure is based on a painting of a black trooper in confederate service! by Don Trioani in his book Regiments and Uniforms of the Civil War, it's sculpted in magic sculpt with a historex head still a fair amount of tidying up to do before painting

Looks just like the Troiani print, nice job, one thing though, they weren't troopers per say, they were servants and teamsters that armed themselves. Sorry to be a stickler, I have just spent several years doing research into the subject of black participation in the Confederate Military.

I accept what you say I merely used the term back trooper because that is how trioani describes him bet he didn't appear on the muster rolls of the army of tennessee though.Incidently did your research reveal any evidence of any regular black confederate troops?

I nearly didn't post the photos because they're so poor I'm having trouble with the camera. I've ordered a new one, hopefully when it arrives (and I've learned how to use it) I'll be able to post some better shots

Sorry to be picky, professional hazard. In answer to your question, no.

There's an excellent article in the current Civil War Times magazine concerning this very topic. Cleburne (and I believe Lee) pushed for the arming of slaves. Naturally these proposals were censored by the Confederate government. It wasn't until things were desperate that the issue was seriously discussed. On March 13, 1865 the Confederate congress enacted a statute authorizing the president to enlist some slaves "to perform military service". Unfortunatly, Cleburne having been killed the year before, did not get to see this carried out. Just before Richmond fell Confederate "soldiers" paraded in the streets.
Now whether they "fired a shot in anger" is another story. There a few photographs of black "rebs" (some armed) in Confederate gray, but like Matt said, they mostly performed mess duties. I wouldn't doubt armed picket duty too.

They (the south) were far too late to enlist them.
Maybe for the better. 4 years of bloody conflict was sufficiant, I belief.
