    Hi Mark, nice bust!

Do you know who sculpted this?

From 'Rommel's Army in Africa' by Dal McGuirk: Generalleutnant Rommel's olive tan cotton twill uniforms received a lot of wear apparent by their bleached appearance after the early summer of 1941. He wore the modified French army shirts with button down collars which made it easier to wear his Knights Cross and Pour le Merite. And then of course the captured British anti-dust goggles from the dump at Mechili.

From the colour photo section of 'Afrikakorps' by Francois de Lannoy: Rank insignia gold on red.The brest eagle is gold on a black backing. Schirmmutze white metal insignia, gold piping to crown and gold cap cords, but looks like silver piping top and bottom of headband. Also his schirmmutze has held its olive colour, unlike his tunic which is bleached almost pale sand. Don't forget the blue on his Pour le Merit that's just visible.

    All the best,
    Jon.

Supposed to be the real deal. Probably a pic from Manfred Rommel`s collection of some years back.

The goggles don`t look right however.

Good looking bust there, like to see the work in progress.

    WOOOHHHAAA!!!

    RL,
I didn't know that one of ER's uniforms still existed! Most families destroyed everything military post war. If it is in Manfred Rommel's collection the provenance is beyond doubt. Do you know if it's on display in a museum?

I'm off to Normandy for a long weekend this summer. I know from a previous visit many moons ago that most museums are quite a tedious line up of mannequins wearing a hotch-potch of thrown together uniforms, normally inaccurate and out of context. However, when a museum displays items with a history and uniforms to named individuals who were actually there, it really is quite amazing. One such is the new 'Dead Man's Corner' museum near Carentan. It includes the complete uniform worn by forrest guth on D-Day.

It would be great if there was a similar museum for the war in North Africa, with Rommel's uniform, Monty's beret and caravans, the Bovington Tiger I,....!

    Cheers,
    Jon

    Good one Mark,

This is a beautifully sculpted bust and I'm looking forward to seeing how you paint it. You're lucky to have pics of Rommels' uniform for reference.

Jon ... thanks for the info and the sculptor as listed on the box is Darrell Stridh :) and check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erwin_Rommel for info on the museum.

yes i was not sure on the box artwork but saw it in the resin on evilbay and liked it alot! :)

they are supposed to be MK 3 eye shields .... :)

Jamie! not a factory just an obsesive LOL cheers mate :)

Thanks Rob! the wittman bust has taken most work and is starting to look ok, but still got lots to do on it before i undercoat it ;)

as soon as i make any i'll post :)

yes he was so popular even with the allies that the reference is great! Upon hearing of his death Churchill said

"He also deserves our respect, because, although a loyal German soldier, he came to hate Hitler and all his works, and took part in the conspiracy to rescue Germany by displacing the maniac and tyrant. For this, he paid the forfeit of his life. In the sombre wars of modern democracy, there is little place for chivalry."

one aspect i have come to love about figure modelling is the research ...

thanks for the input everyone .... right where's me brushes!

so i'm calling the head done, warts and all. it's a long way from perfect but it's had about 12 hours of my life and there's a jacket to contend with!

the hands need another hour or two to get them right
