After being inspired by John Long's seminar at the Atlanta show (see review at AMFS web page), I decided to do a vignette based on this picture from the book Uniformes of The French Revolutionary Wars by Philip Haythornwaite.

I am going to build the figures out of Historex parts.

I started by using a couple of junk figures to size the base.

Using John Long's suggestion, I used green floral foam to rough out the groundwork. It is a little messy, but carves well.

I have selected the Historex pieces and wired them together. I used 22 guage craft wire as it bends easy to get the figures into the correct pose. I had to cut off most of the molded detail because these two guys will be in ragtag uniforms, not the parade dress the original pieces show. They are pretty sad looking fellows right now. I wll try to help them out with some putty as soon as a busy life gives me time to work on them.

Thanks for the SBS Pete, look forward to the next stage.

The finished piece will be both interesting and different from the normal combat scenes.

    Hello Pete,

It come's slowly come's together. Did you made the tree from wire? I have that done a several times. It is working good, but with wath do you cover the wire.
It is gonna be a very nice vignette.

    Hi Pete

This is looking really good. I'm familiar with the picture and I have often thought it would make an excellent vignette. However, there's a whole big gap between thinking and doing, so full marks to you for "doing". I'll be watching developments with interest.

    Cheers

Looking good little buddy. Can't wait to see the next stage. And what did you make the tree from?

After seven months of no activity on this project (due to a heavy work load this past year), I finally got off my rear and decided to try finishing this for the Atlanta show. So last month I started up again and poured on the putty and midnight oil.
I started with the base, and found some plastic leaves and styrofoam beads to make the tree and the apples. By the way, were there red apples in 1797? I added some green stuff I found at the floral shop in Joann's Crafts that I used for the little bushes. I used some azeala bush roots for the tree roots coming out of the bank.
That's a historex dog following these guys.
I have undercoated with acrylics, and am still adding to the figures. I realize I don't like painting stripes on pants or making arms.
Please be open with your critisism so I can improve in the future.

Pete, Great uniform plate to base some figures on. Are you going to paint any of the leaves on the tree?~Gary

    Hi Gary,
I'm going to concentrate on finishing the figures, but I had thought about the leaves. Any suggestions on how you would paint them?

    Great work Pete,

But the green is to bright. It attrackted the eye away from the great figures that you have done.
Move some touches of dark green will. do.

If the individual stems come apart you can try airbrushing each of them, or hire an arborist to thin it out a bit and do old faithfull leaf by leaf.

Pete, I'd paint them any color that does not pop out the way they do in the color they are now. I would also paint the stems/branches to look like tree limbs instead of leaving them green.~Gary

I've done a little on the tree, but the leaves are painted the same color. Maybe I need to darken the apples?
I didn't like the head on the left figure, so changed it. Also, my wife suggested moving the dog to the front.
I have a lot of finishing painting to do, but it is coming together.

Beautiful work, Pete! That floral base is a great idea! I'm gonna have to try that. Nifty idea for a diorama and well-executed, beautifully painted.

    All the best,

    Pete,

That's a nice little scene you've constructed. The bagette on the bayonet is a perfect touch.

Excellent work Pete, good luck at the Show with it.

Nicely composed and painted, your work has gone from strength to strength over past two or three years !!

    Congratulations
