The Bald headed horse.

Hey guys, I delayed in painting the horse, My wife had me painting the recreation room, not a very enjoyable task., but I finally got back on track.
The horse still needs more shadows and highlights.

advice and critique are most welcome.

I- Primed horse with floquil primer.
2- Undercoated the horse using burnt umber acrylic paint.

Oils
1 -Base - Windsor Newton brown madder alizarin + Rembrandt burnt sienna.
2 - Medium shadows - Liquitex dioxide purple,
Any purple will do.
3 -Dark shadows - mix ivory black into medium shadow.
4 - Medium highlight - Mars red.
5 -Extreme highlights - Mars orange applied to the uppermost part of the horse.
6-Extreme shadows - pure Ivory black.


The eyes
used the same black mixture as stated above,when dry I will give the eye a wash with cadmium red deep, and add the catch light with a little titanium white.
After eye is completely dry,I will mix some ttwo part clear epoxy glue and apply it over the entire eye, to give it a nice sparkle.

The hoofs.
Base - Parchment + raw Sienna.
Shadow- burnt umber.
Highlight - unbleached titanium.

Horse shoes-
Testor silver with a little burnt umber and ivory black added to it.
Shadows - ivory black.
Highlight- testor silver with a touch of burnt umber.
Catch light - pure silver.

The mouth - .

The tongue
Base- Cadmium red with a little parchment mixed into it.
Highlight -Titanium white with a little bit of the base color.

Teeth
Base- unbleached titanium with a little burnt umber and a touch of cadmium red.
Shadow- burnt umber.
High light - unbleached titanium.
Extreme highlights - titanium white.

When completely dry, usually after two weeks, I will give it a light sheen
I use a mixture of 25% linseed oil and 75% turps, I apply this mixture with a large flat brush, when dry, and it will give the horse natural looking sheen.

Next I will paint the saddle.

I have to agree with everyone else Roc. Very nice looking. I generally only paint lighter horses because I can't seem to capture the "look" of the darker horses. Not the case with you. Again, great job .

Now that, my friend is a great looking horse. And your description of your different mixes is a thoughtful idea on your part. I know it will help me on my next mounted figure. Purple for medium shadows...hmmmm...never thought of that. Definitely something to try, thx.

Roc, I've been neglecting what our fellow painters are doing and I'd like to say that horse is looking great. I like the added touch of noting your formulas for the colors used, I know how valuable they are. Keep it up.~Gary
