This is not something I would normally paint but I saw this mini bust, and The Old Captain on Nap's For Sale posting and just couldn't resist them.

I have started on The Apothecary, after small amount of cleaning up and washing I gave him a light coat of white primer.

    P1130826 (2).JPG

Today I started to paint his head in Artist's oils.

    P1130831 (2).JPG P1130832 (2).JPG

I shall now leave him to dry before painting his hair.

    Hi Geoff

As always a great start , like the ruddy cheeks , I envisaged him to like a tipple ...or two

Sure you've posted it but what's your flesh mix ?

    Look forward to seeing more

Is there no stopping you? Another great choice Geoff and looks like your off to a super start. I do like these busts with the faces full of character, expect it was a joy to paint. I’ve just picked up a United Empire bust of Mad King George whilst at Euro and it was the character of the face that attracted me to that. It might be one worth looking at if it’s still in production/available anywhere.

Thanks Nap, it was either him or me have a tipple mate.

I usually follow this chart I found a few years online, the odd colour and the mix changes to give different changes in skin tone, as you know I hate to see models with all the same colour skin.

    P1120493 (3).JPG

    The colours I use:
Base.. White and Burnt Sienna then either Raw Umber or a mix of Raw Umber and Vandyke Brown for the lining around for the stage 2 This is then lightly blended in by dragging from the flesh tone across the brown lining, where possible, with an old dry brush, this brush is then wiped clean after 3-4 strokes, on a tissue to remove the paint.
Next stage is apply the Burnt Sienna or Burnt Sienna/ Vandyke Brown mix as in guide and again blend and wiping as before, keep the blending brush dry from cleaning fluid or you will remove the base colour, just a wipe on a tissue.
Follow all the stages but from now on stipple the finish with just the end of the brush at right angle to the surface, this smooths out the colour changes.

This is the stippling brush I use, P1130866 (2).JPG

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers

Very nice Geoff, nice tones but by the time you've read this, you may have a bit more paint on him.

A few more stages pics, really pleased with my progress but he is quite small and not much body to him.

    Hair painted Sky Grey

    P1130867 (2).JPG

Hair given a Citadel Nuln oil wash and the shadow side of the creases given some dilute Hull Red and the shirt painted with Ivory.

    P1130871 (2).JPG

The first thin wash of a mix of Red Leather, Dark Vermilion and Red(which is a light Crimson)

    P1130872 (2).JPG

More of the thin washes applied to the body and some high-lights added using some Ivory added to the red mix. The bow tie shade areas given a coat of MA Dark Seagreen and the buttons.

    P1130873 (2).JPG

Some Ivory mixed to the Dk. Seagreen and applied to the bow tie.

    P1130875 (2).JPG

That's it for today, time to see the wife.

    Cheers,
