    Destruction of the temple

I’m kind of soft when it’s about old style movies .
In times when CGI and motion capture performance did not exist, everything was done by hand . And sometimes we are still astonished about the fact how they did it .
Cecile B. Demille directed the 1949 Paramount production of the classic story “ Samson and Delilah “ starring Victor Mature and Hedy Lamarr . The end sequence ( you can find it on you tube ) shows the destruction of the temple by Samson using his superhuman powers .Pushing 2 columns apart the roof collapses. I saw the movie many years ago and by coincidence I stumbled on a poster designed for moviepublicity .
    The idea was born .
I t was a challenge to sculpt a nearly naked figure . Anatomy was very important .I stayed very close to the artwork of the poster showing a Samson , athletic but no Schwarzenegger style.
The second challenge was to create the illusion that the columns where falling down .
The columns are made from balsa wood and covered with Vallejo paste using a small sponge. The elements of the columns are fixed with a small wire just holding them together at the edge of every part . Making the illusion they are falling .

The figure is scratchbuild using home made mannequin parts to start .scale aprox. 54 mm.
The first layer to start the muscle structure is milliput . The top layer is magic sculpt .
The cloth he is wearing is made from green stuff ( duro ).
The head - as always- is from the Hornet range .
The chains are real miniature chains . They are available from different manufacturers.
    F.e. Verlinden Productions .

The painting is done using Vallejo acrylics as basecolours . And Windsor and Newton oil paints to finish . Metals are also from the Vallejo acrilyc range .
The thorax is slightly glossy , because I used some dilluted oil ( from an oil paint tube ) to simulate sweat. In those days the make up department did the same thing with actors , together with the lightning it gave a very oily effect.

That is really cool. I have been reading the Bible story to my son's these past few mornings before school about Samson. I will have to show them your miniature now.
