    Finally finished this figure this afternoon. I purchased him at Chicago in October 2012, and all progress ground to a halt as I became a bit frustrated with my painting. I thought if I left him to the side of the work bench for a bit, I would find the necessary inspiration. I eventually did find it, in a can of paint stripper, so I started over and managed a better job of it within a few weeks. I had a friend offer some advice on my painting, suggesting I try to make the shadow areas darker, and I have tried to do that, so I'd be grateful for any observations you may care to share.

    Hi glen
    What a fantastic job the tones and colours work wonderful to bring the whole composition together ,love the the groundwork and the placing of the white bark birch tree was a clever addition to the composition .
    Great job mate

    Nice one Glenn. I've sometimes found the figures I've stripped and then re-done have been the most satisfying in the end.
    I'm always wary of being over-critical of people's painting on here becasue you have to take into account graphics cards, monitor settings etc, but this one looks to be a strong, crisp painting job there - well done.

    Ground work is top as well.(y)

    Thanks Ron, Mike, Chris, Blind Pew, Marc, Brian, Smudger, swralph, Jeff, Gerry and Ken. Your comments are especially encouraging as I have often struggled with ground work on my figures. One of these days I will have to try my hand at another species of tree, but for now, birch is working for me. I have also just realized that I placed this figure into the scene without so much as a swipe of chalk pastel for weathering! Clearly, I will need to get him a bit dirty!

    Are you sure Badger? Maybe a few delicate grass or dirt stains? I can barely get through a day without spilling something on myself, or at least that's what my wife says.

    Great job on a very difficult figure.
    I bought this one a couple of years ago and when I saw how many pieces there were I couldn't figure how many subassemblies to do this in :nailbiting: so he's still in the box!
    Your paint job has inspired me to have another look and give it a go. How much did you build at once and how many sub assemblies did you end up with?
    For what it's worth, he is very naturally found in a stand of birch trees... you made the right choice for sure;)
    Job well done

    Hi Colin;

    To be honest, it was over a year ago that I first assembled him so I've forgotten some of the sub assembly details. I can say for certain that I had the majority of the figure put together before priming, and I left off things like the war club, satchel and powder horn until after I had painted the coat. When I stripped it, I did remove the club and powder horn, but repainted him with the satchel glued into place. But the coat was all assembled and I had to be careful to get the yellow of the lining applied without staining the skin tones. It was a challenge but in the end not to difficult a task. Hope that helps.

    Thanx that does help. My big concern was how to handle the pieces of the coat... building it all first makes the most sense to me as well. Thanx

    Again, you've done a great job on a very difficult piece.

    Cheers
