Kulmbach Is Razed To The Ground ...!

Where the tent for the famous tin figure exchange stands every two years today...

... rivers of blood flowed on November 26, 1553!

The so-called "Second Margrave War" raged in southern Germany in 1553, a dispute between Margrave Albrecht Alcibiades of Brandenburg-Kulmbach ...

... has broken off the fence.

The Hohenzoller Albrecht (an ancestor of the later Prussian kings and German emperors) pretends to fight Catholicism and attacks the Catholic monasteries of Würzburg under Melchior Zobel von Giebelstadt...

... and Bamberg under Weigand von Redwitz...

... which he forces to high payments and compels them to cede him substantial land holdings.

In truth, the religious bromorium is just an excuse!

In reality, Margrave Albrecht wants to increase his position of power in Franconia and expand his political influence!

And that requires military power - and soldiers cost money!

Since Mr. Markgraf couldn't even raid a savings bank in order to get the necessary change (that didn't exist back then!), he grabs the very rich pegs!

In the end, the inhabitants of his residence town Kulmbach have to pay for it!

Because the rest of the story is quickly told:

    Emperor Charles V...

... is of course "not amused" about the provincial prince's brazen raid and imposed imperial ban on him.

The Franconian princes, who would be at the expense of an expansion of power by the Hohenzollers, are even less "not amused" - and as their colleague Albrecht is ostracized, they mobilize against him militarily (and with the emperor's blessing)!

The militarily experienced Duke Heinrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel ...

... is appointed as leader of these "federal" troops, who still personally has an account with Margrave Albrecht:

In the battle of Sievershausen (please don't look for it in Franconia or Bavaria, the small town is in Solling in southern Lower Saxony!) ...

... were in battles between Albrecht's army and the "federal" troops except for their commander-in-chief Moritz von Sachsen ...

... two sons of the Brunswick man had been killed!

Heinrich von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel doesn’t spend long time with dearching for Margrave Albrecht, instead, he sets off with his army from Braunschweig, Bohemia, Bamberg, Nuremberg and Würzburg directly on Albrecht's capital and residence town of Kulmbach which is only defended by a handful of soldiers because Albrecht still needs the last man for his field army.

On November 26, 1553, Konradi Day, Kulmbach was captured after a brief siege.

A diorama of it is on the Plassenburg today ...:

That could be the end of the story, but unfortunately it is not yet!

Because - as I said - the Braunschweig resident is full of deep vengeance because of his two dead sons.

So immediately after the capture of Kulmbach, on the same day, he orders all male residents of the city to be killed without exception and then Kulmbach to be completely destroyed ...:

There are many such signs in today's old town of Kulmbach: "Destoyed on November 26, 1553" ...:

    [IMG] [IMG]

    [IMG] [IMG]

    [IMG] [IMG]

Only the Plassenburg on a mountain above the city cannot be taken, where the defenders hold out for another six months until they have to surrender on June 22, 1554.

Margrave Albrecht has already lost his last battle, that at Schwarzach near Kitzingen...:

In the Plassenburg the conquerors find a large part of the treasures that Albrecht looted, which are salvaged and returned to their owners. Then the Plassenburg will also be largely destroyed.

Before it looked like this ...:

    And today like this...:

Oh yes, the arsonist Albrecht survived the major fire he started - he only had to go into exile to Pforzheim, where he lived with his sister until he died three years later.

Think of that November 26th almost 470 years ago when you next go there...
