Okay, well you could always start by googling model clubs in your area. Slightly further afield from RH (but still not a million miles away) you have Welling Model Club, who are fairly well-known on the hobby scene in the UK and have some very talented members:

What are the best miniatures to buy? There's no single answer to that, and no right or wrong answer. It depends entirely on things like your own interests, budget and what you are looking to achieve. And do you prefer working with resin, metal or plastic? Do you want to paint full figures? Or busts? Or both? Fantasy figures or historical?

Some guys say buy the best (quality) that you can afford, because it's harder to achieve satisfying results on a poor figure and that could put beginners off before they've even got started. Others think the opposite and say it's best to start off with some cheap figures in order to hone your skills. Personally I can see the merits in both arguments.

This site is a gold mine of information and advice, you just need to search and dig around for the information that you're after. But there's still no substitute for practice, practice and more practice - many long hours of trial & error, success & failure, satisfaction & frustration sitting at your own work bench.

Remember though: Don't get discouraged if you mess things up (we've all been there, and as a painter/modeller you never stop learning) and if there's anything specific you need to know, there will always be someone around in here to give you suggestions, pointers and advice.

    Have fun!

I'm also new to this wonderful hobby and the best advice given to me was just start painting. Nothing teaches you more than doing it and learning from mistakes. Choose a subject you like and give it a go. You can always remove the paint and start over or do what I do. Work through it and finish. When you paint your next figure you will see improvement. And don't be afraid to ask questions. This is the best bunch of people you could ask for.

    Mi Malc,

Another club which may be more local is the North Surrey Militray Modelling Club, http://nsmmg.org.uk/

Welcome to a wonderful hobby forum and I can see that you are already getting lots of good advice, just to give you a heads up and make you aware of a mistake that I made several years ago on returning to the hobby after a 30 year break and that was to search for figures on EBAY, nothing wrong with that but unfortunately mixed in with genuine bargains there are what are known as RE-CASTERS selling copied figures at discounted prices, in my ignorance I snapped up several of these but noticed quickly that the quality of casting was poor, full of air bubbles, severe mold lines, distorted anatomy and equipment and one hell of a task to put all this right before applying primer, the penny eventually dropped and seeing posts on Planet Figure from companies and sculptors most of who are small businesses and plagued with the theft of their hard work I then realised that I had fallen into the trap.
Summing up I can say that the amount of additional work needed with these re-casts is enough to put anyone off figure modelling so my advice is to throw your change into a wee jar and save until you see something you really like from a reputable company and go for that, many of the releases now have very few defects or clean up required, read reviews and check out the youtube videos and don't waste your money.
