Thanks Vitalino for feedback & welcome your comments.

These guys cut up the brim of their hats & I tried to represent this 'Rough Rider' look of theirs.

Maybe I missed it but do hope in a little way it honoured their memory.

    Stay safe,

Thank you for taking time to post a reply Nap.

My Colour mixes can be a bit confused ;-) but will try ...

    >Leather: base Jo Sonja Cadmium Orange, main leather tone Archival oils Mars Violet (nice colour ;-) then shadowing with oils Pthalo Green & Paynes Gray, surface highlights Raw Sienna & Arylamide Yellow Deep.
Detail scratches & chipping on edges Citadel Snakebite Leather with light sand

    >Uniform: base Vallejo English Uniform mixed with Jo Sonja Provincial beige, shading Jo Sonja Paynes Gray.
highlights using Vallejo Green Ochre, Jo Sonja Naples Yellow.
Note all colour mixed well together using Winsor & Newton Blending medium mixed with Tamiya X21 Flat Base then stippled together in progressive layers.

    How's that sound?

    Hi Mike
    What a great paint job.

Your timing of posting this perfect.
Can I pick your brains please?

After reading Glyn Harpers book Dark Journeys 3 key NZ battles of the Western front (a great read by the way)
I'm looking to modify the Youngs Miniatures Somme bust to either the 1st or 2nd Auckland Battalion.
However I cannot find any references for the Battalion Tab on the upper arm and collar, epaulette badges
are you able to help please with reference pictures?

    Many thanks

Thanks mate for feedback. Haven't read Glyn's book but would love to get his latest photographic essay on WW1.

Attached couple of images to help you - are these useful?

Stay safe & may 2014 be a good one for you & family.

    Cheers Mike
    Thanks for the quick reply.
Google just was no help this time round,I'm looking to start on this piece in about 2-3 months but want to get my research done early, and finish acouple of pieces I've had kicking around for a couple of years first.

And to you and yours a good 2014.

BTW which online retailer do you purchase from? Looking for quality service and cost to this neck of the woods.

Depends what you are after mate - prefer to support sculptor directly where possible otherwise when I buy I've shopped with Steve of SK miniatures, Red Lancers & Firestorm in Aussie.

Kiwi $ is good so most things are reasonable price nowadays.

    Hope this helps.

Hello Mike, Been awhile my friend. Great painting on the face, you have always been able to show that sun, and weather beaten look to the skintones. Your material texturing on the tunic is very realistic, and adds to the authentic look of the uniform. Excellent work on this piece Mike. Congrats, Regards, SG:)(y)(y)

Thank you John & Sturm good to get my brushes on to a bigger piece.
Took this as an opportunity to do this piece as an acknowledgement to Steve, as well as the brave young NZMR men of our "forgotten" desert campaign.
Aussies normally get all the press due to the feathered hat ;-) We have another word for that, not expressed in mixed company :)
Our lads were there all the way through including many of the Light Horse Charges at Beersheba etc.

Especially good to hear skin tones look right, as on other monitors it can appear a bit too ruddy, tried hard to get the effect of a young, "veteran" campaigner from Gallipoli & Palestine.

Pleased he has come out OK & look forward to some more WW1 projects during the coming year.
In meantime back to small pilots - got a super little RNZAF pilot to do first up too.

Happy 2014 to you & your families.

    Stay safe,

    Mike
