Nice looking piece and the leather work is brilliant, but is that moko actually carved into the face?..
It seems to be, and it looks pretty deep as well?..I'm not too familiar with that kind of traditional body work, but I don't think it's something that's chiselled in...is it?

Hi Tony thanks mate how's your one coming along.

Trying to get him done before I head to UK in June so may not get many more shots done, will have to see how it goes tonite.

Snapping these quickly on iPad so no fuss but don't provide proper detail.

    Talk again soon

    Hi Mark

    Thank you for comments.
Andy has chosen to etch Tā moko into this guy & for me this has 2 reasons:

    1. References state the deeper the chisels the braver the warrior was. I'm trying to represent a veteran scout in his 40s so plenty of effort to cut this repeatedly like scarification. Contemporary images show deep markings so I can live with this & will work hard to try & make this look realistic.

    2. Andy has done what other artists do with raised detail on flags & heraldry - tried to make it easier for a painter to represent Tā moko in miniature.

Further info below, trust this helps.

    MIke

"Tā moko is the permanent body and face marking by Māori, the indigenous people of New Zealand. Traditionally it is distinct from tattoo and tatau in that the skin was carved by uhi (chisels) rather than punctured. This left the skin with grooves, rather than a smooth surface.

Repinned from Inscribed Bodies by Spencer Keralis"

Hi Nap will have to see how I go with more in progress have a time line on getting this done before end of month so trying not to get distracted too much, but will see what I can do.

Leather is Games Workshop Zambesi Desert heavily coated. Then covered with oils Rowney Sepia, W&N burnt umber, yellow ochre & Rembrandt Viridian. Various levels of these to get some tonal variation. After approx 24 hrs fine etching with sharp tooth pick & side of an old flat brush ferrule rubbed gently & roughly to remove oil revealing base coat. Andy has added lots of detail on the leather making this easier to being out.

Highlights added using various light leather tones from acrylics & deeper shadows with oil washes.

    Hope this helps mate.

Back to painting. Maybe some more photos later.

Excellent progress shot Mike. I hadn't noticed the level of intricate carving on the stock of the rifle, but it's amazing. Following with great interest.

I agree with your approach to painting ta moko. The deeper carved patterns will be quite a challenge to paint, but I'm sure you'll do a stunning job.
