WIP Imperial Gallery Grenadier Bust SBS

    Hi Guys have been asked a few times to do a SBS on face painting, so here it is.After the usual clean up and primer I undercoat with Humbrol 250.The next stage is underpainting the shadows with thin washes of oils,Warm Sepia,Cadmium Red,Paynes Grey being the colours used.

    The next stage is the first highlights and shadows.The colours used are from the lightest to the darkest Titanium White,Naples yellow deep,Flesh ochre,Cadmium red,Brown madder,Warm sepia,Raw umber,Sepia extra and Paynes grey.

    In the next stage I rework the highlights and shadows, then add detail to the eyes,lips etc.I have also undercoated the hair to help judge if I need to adjust any tones on the face.At this stage I have also started undercoating the Mitrecap in Humbrol enamels.

    Well done Davie, thats a cracking job you are doing on the bust. I think you have captured exactly what I meant when I said about him being a war weary veteran. who has seen a bit of action in his years. Brilliant indeed.

    Thanks for posting this David, these SBS's are so useful and such a help in developing ones own technique-Do you start with the same colours and change the mix according to the figure? or are there other colours you might add if circumstances demand it? Do you let the washes dry and work wet on dry or keep going wet on wet?
