Here is a head I've been working on this weekend. It's 54mm. The ears are in the beginning stages, and the jaw line seems too heavy. Comments welcome.

    John,
the proportions within the face look good. I think unless he is going to be a heavy set chap he does look a bit "jowly". Hard to tell wothout seeing other angles. Keep us posted!

    John,
Nice chunky face, what's it look like from other angles? I hope you meant for him to be a heavy set guy, if not don't throw him away just make a mold and use when you need a heavy guys face. ;) Sometimes when not feeling particularly energetic I'll sit and play at sculpting faces, they even, sometimes, come out nicely. Of course if I luck out and make a nice head by mistake, then I'll make a mold from it. Most of the heads I make now are alterations of heads I made earlier, having the ability to cast the things really makes alterations a breeze, and improvements almost painless. :)

    John,

I cannot sculpt so it is hard to give any advice. One thing that I noticed though is that IMO the tip of the nose is out of the centreline comparing with the bridge of the nose. Maybe the photo is to blame, and if so, forget my comment.

    Best regards

    Johan ;)

He does look like he could easily be a heavily built guy John, but so much can be changed with the shape and volume of the jaw area. Did you have a particular build in mind for him.? I know sometimes I just have some fun with faces and see how they turn out. Good luck with the ears too...not my strong point. :)

    All the best...Roy.

Thanks guys. I have done the ears now and I'm not unhappy with them. I reworked the upper lip a bit. I don't want a heavily built fellow, so I'll try to work the jowl down. It's also diffcult to get an idea without a neck. More later.

Yes I know exactly what you mean John...I like to have the neck there, and even at the correct attitude as I find it gives good guidance and helps work the face toward a specific direction..sorry if that doesn't sound very clear.

Looking forward to seeing those alterations.

    All the best...Roy.

    Hi John,

I would be glad if I had the talent to schulpt a head like you. The head looks very good and the jaw can be changed a bit easyl. I would be interested to learn how you sculpt the head an which tools you had used.

    Keep on going!

I think he looks a bit like Mussolini - maybe? This is gonna be great!

How did you start this? Surely some kind of armature?

    Keep at it John!

    All the best,
    Dan

    Thanks guys.

Tonight I have added hair and a beard. I may or may not add a mustache.

I started with a resin skull. I used some very small beads for the eyes. This helps me immensely regardless of scale. Eyelids are a bear. A while back I whittled down some Airfix heads and used them for practice. I have several rejects.

    John,
Wish you hadn't mentioned beads for eyes, you're kind of stealing my thunder with that. :( I've been planning to make a post, maybe a little SBS on sculpting a 1/32 scale head, the eyes being made from 1/32" diameter aluminum balls. You may already know this, but here it is anyway, the human eye is approximately .98" in diameter. When learning this interesting fact I almost immediately remembered seeing 1/32" dia. aluminum balls in the Carr-McMaster’s catalogue, so ordered them and, wow, certainly makes sculpting eyelids easier and for me ends the controversy of having or not having an actual ball or just a pit to represent eyes in a sculpt. Of course it may be that this so called controversy only existed in my own mind, which isn't at all unlikely considerring all the other strange things that go on in there!

I've got a really crude head armature I use for most new heads finding it a lot easier to start with something, than trying to ball up a bit of putty, wait for it to cure and then locate all the various points necessary for sculpting a reasonably convincing face.

Considering what else to say about this head 'armature' and eyeball thing I think maybe I'll just wait for now and go ahead and do the SBS anyway. That is unless someone would object.

    John,
P.S. I should have directed you to the steely eyed glare of my Colonial Ranger figure posted in the sculpting forum. His aluminum eyes are very visible in the photo's there.

Hey Ray. Thanks for your comments. I think you should do a SBS regardless. I like using beads for eyes. I looked a long time for the right size for 54 though. I used some old ball bearings for some of the 120mm heads I did. For 75mm I use the same beads, I just have dig for the bigger ones.

    Here's more.

    John,
I'll try to get the SBS done sometime soon. It will likely be a continuation of another I am already working on instead of a seperate one.

The larger size balls as well as 1/32" balls won't be any problem, it's really the smallest that are a bother. Anything less than 1/32" seems to be kind of rare, though taking them from ball point pens may be just the thing in place of locating someone that would sell them in lesser quatities. Anyway, have a look at this link for your needs greater than 1/32".

Your head sculpt is really great and doesn't look at all like a fatman anymore, thanks for the look at him.

I redid the beard. I added an extension to the chin. This allowed the beard to appear longer. I also started a new head. One of the ears broke off while I was carving it. I think this is my best effort so far and I wish my photography skills were better.

Hi John...he looks much better with the new beard, more natural. The second head is looking excellent too, I think even better than the first, with good expression.
Looking forward to the next steps.

    All the best..Roy.
