Hola Guys!

While finishing up the 75mm Para, I browsed the forums and saw Gary's recent flat sculpt. The painter, Charles Willson Peale, really took my eye and I did a search on him and found this beauty. I decided to quit thinking about it and acctually do it so I plunged right into the world of sculpting flats. The first things I have found out that it is very time consuming, you have to work on a small area at a time, in the picture I have baked it 4 times, and you can see how much is done. Thinking in 2D is screwing me up baddly and I feel very lucky to have the oppertunity to work in 3D at the same time as it is driving me nuts! Anyways, here is the Gentleman and my start. It has been real fun so far, very different but a whole lot of fun.

Also bitten by the flatvirus. Well, they have to bit you more because if think you did a marvelous job on this one.

Anders, He's off to a good start. The only thing I can point out is the lapel. it looks to be laying almost flat against the body verses being raised. I think adding a bit more of an undercut would give it more depth. It definitely requires a different approach from that of a fully round figure.~Gary

Its a challenge thats for sure! Makes me nute to have to think 2d instead of 3d!

Gary, yeah I see what you are saying, had a heck of a time with that part as it was. I thought one can paint that, but at same time I think your right. What should I do to make it look better (like I said, no 2d perspective at all!).

I'd raise the outside edge of the coat and also raise the triangular shape formed bt the inside of the collar.~Gary

Exactly.. and how to approach : outside in or inside outward! a total rethinking..

I wouldn't sweat too much as the shadows and highlights are all on the painters shoulders!

It's looking good so far Anders.
You'll find that the slightest curve in a profile or the smallest change in direction of a fold can have huge effects on a flat and how the 3d perspective looks...

And as Gordy says, a lot of the depth is left to the painter to bring out...
