I'm going to be the fly in the ointment here I'm afraid. I don't like it it's beautiful and wonderfully painted but to my eyes it's sterile more like porcelain than a "real" thing theres no life in it for me. Please dont take this as jealous or bitter just how I see it.

It is beutifuly painted and there is an awful lot of detail to take in but I do tend to agree with Steve. I saw it in the display case and my first thought was 'WOW!'. Unfortunately my second thought was 'who and what is it?' and that kind of took the edge off it for me a little. I think a vignette or diorama should stir some emotion in you, convey a sense of drama or occassion and sadly it didn't do it for me and I accept that may be partly down to my lack of knowledge of French history. Great craftsmanship and absolutely stunning brushwork without doubt and if I could paint half as well as that I would be a happy man :)

Thanks for the link, Wendy! I half suspected that the piece was based on a painting, from the posing and composition. The technical skill is excellent, I like his work on the fabrics especially, the caparison and the parasol.

    Prost!

I don't like it, the subject means nothing to me, I do not understand it, but I always thought Euro Militaire was a painting competition, and in that sense it was stunning, and I can understand why the judges singled it out, but it was not for me. By the way I did nt enter the competition.

I think it is stunning and also depicts people that do not like to sunbathe. Excellent time piece but just my opinion.

Credit where it's due - this piece is absolutely stunning! The painting and detail are just phenomenal.
A well deserved BOS by Mr Speranza!

Thanks for the link Wendy, most interesting. Sadly the painting doesn't do much for me either which may be why I wasn't moved by the model as Gianfranco has created a fantastic 3D rendition of the original.
