Something a bit different for me in a lot of ways. My oldest son (Nick) is a writer and teacher (and a newly minted father! :0 - see pics of my lovely granddaughter elsewhere!) and my youngest (Kyle) is an artist and in training to be a nurse. They combined their gifts to write and illustrate a noir novel, with the main character a take-off from a Jim Thompson novel, The Get-Away. Those of you who don't know Jim Thompson may adjourn to your nearest book store or library and check out his dark noir fiction.

Short cut to Low-Key Comics and an installment of their graphic novel.

Enough preamble. Nick and Kyle asked me to do a figure of the character. He's a very bad (actually I would use some more descriptive Anglo-Saxon adjectives but this site is PG) Mexican gangster. I asked Kyle for a 3 view sketch of the character and he gave me these excellent drawings to work from. So far I've just started on the head a little bit. It's a conversion from a 120 mm resin head that I believe is from the Model Cellar French soldier. To be honest I'm not sure! Your comments and constructive critique would be welcome.

    All the best,

Thanks very much Mike and Roger!! Your encouragement means a lot! There are two or three story lines in the works and I think Nick intends to eventually tell El Rey's life story in a "pre-quel". To get a really good feel for Kyle's art work, you really need to go to the comic book web site. Stay tuned.

    All the best,

Since I posted the photos, I've added some hair, changed the moustache a little and changed the angle of one cheekbone so it's a bit more pronounced. Also put together an armature for the whole figure. Thanks Pete!

Gary - Take a tour on the comic book site if you have time. Kyle's stuff really comes alive when you see the action. And yes, I have some marvelously talented sons. My daughter is also a gifted soul and a fine elementary school teacher. I'm a lucky guy and count my many blessings often. :)

Nick and Kyle have published a small run of the Low Key comic books and they're available for purchase if anybody is interested. [Shameless plug!!]

Any suggestions you have for the face would be greatly appreciated!

Periklis - Many thanks for your encouragement! This afternoon, I've widened and flattened the bottom part of the chin. Now for some carving and light sanding.

    All the best,

A question for the painters. I'd like to give El Rey rattlesnake leather boots, belt, gun holsters and a hat band with a rattlesnake rattle. If I can stipple a rattlesnake leather pattern, could a painter paint it?

    All the best,
    Dan

    Dan,

As a painter, I would rather not have that to restrict the pattern I would put on it. My other fear is that any texture you could add would be out of scale for the skin. My two cents.

Marc - Thanks for your comment! John - Your point about scale is well taken. I couldn't possibly do it to scale. I gather your idea would be to have the painter just paint the pattern on smooth putty. Obviously the problem with that is rattlesnake hide isn't smooth. Hmmmm. I don't think I can come up with a workable compromise either. I really like the idea of the bumpy snake hide boots. Any suggestions?

    All the best,
    Dan
