The pattern is laid out on the bandana for the poka dots using primer and after drying each is blended and shaded.

Thanks Marc......glad you are enjoying this too. It is about 1/2 way now with the standing pirate and the Captain yet to go. If there is enough room without crowding the whole scene I have a 5th pirate I want to use as well.

Thanks Gary. I have always felt Verlinden paints their box art with the drabbest colors and one has to look past the drab colors and see the detail. The box pictured below has some pretty drab colors for the Pirate Captain. I am working on cleaning up the figure now and will totally disregard the box art suggestion and add some "color" to the captain.

Thanks Quang. I have re-read the camera's instruction book and also went online and looked at the manufacturer's site dealing with this Model of Fuji. The hardest is keeping it steady for quick shots without having to set up the lighting and backdrop and tabletop tri-pod each time I take a pic.

For my s-b-s pics, I use this monopod to steady the cam.

No need to adjust lightning or backdrop whatsoever. Everything stays in the same position as when I'm working on the figure.

While I am doing the seams on the newest pirate I also continue with the 2nd and 3rd figure. The sash, pants and scarf have been completed and now to the arms and head.





The dead pirate has his arms and the right leg added with just the sword to complete here. I have also selected a large Thomas base and have begun positioning the figures for the final scene.

I went into my base supply and came out with a Ken Thomas 8 inch round for the scene to be mounted to. I also fastened the second pirate to the kit base which in turn will be incorporated into the total groundwork later.



This is about where it will be centered on the base and later work the sculpty-mold up to the resin base.

I have cleaned, primed and base coated the Captain who will be with a red jacket, green vest, white sash and a red poka dot bandana. The next step to the Captain is to blend and shade these base colors.

Sorry to be the one who contradicts all the postings, but you did say that "all comments are welcome" ...

I think the fleshtones look way too yellow. If I may be so bold, I recommend laying off of the yellow and try adding some other colors besides gold ochre (just an educated guess), such as jaune brilliant (OK, this is a "yellow" color, but it's a "reddish yellow" ), naples yellow red (again, another "reddish yellow" color. In fact, so "reddish" that it doesn't even look yellow), or just plain white to your base mix. By the way, what is your base mix? Perhaps this is where the excessive yellow lies. Although the transitions between colors looks okay, the yellow tone of the fleshtones doesn't look natural.

It's hard (at least for me) to judge a digital picture, but for what I see Guy's pictures tends to be not so well colour-balanced.
Please, do not take as a critique, my pictures are much worse, is just my opinion (and to avoid any kind of controversy, this IS NOT what I was referring to when I was talking about Photoshop some thread ago) - I do not want to argue at all, just trying to help, even if my knowledge about it is really poor.
Balancing a picture without seeing the original and without having a 'true' color as reference is really hard, but I think the original piece does not look so yellow.
However, I think is a really beautiful vignette.

Pete - Thanks Pete. The yellow I use is Cadium Yellow, Windsor Newton. I may try a different yellow as I see your point. Although I like the oils for flesh.....I am constantly trying to improve the end result and your comment helps me look at another factor........try a different yellow. Thanks again Pete.

Luca - Thanks Luca. I am still struggling with the new camera and when taking sbs photos, I do not go to the trouble to set up the photo equipment and tri-pod but rather just take quick snapshots right at my work desk. When the figures are finished, I usually set up the equipment and adjust the balance and white. Just don't have enough room for a permanent photo area. I think too, that the fact that I am in a room with windows on 3 sides and the daylight that streams into the room can also effect how the "snap-shots" come out. Cloudy day versus sunny day.

added comment: Actually the comments that may seem negative when you leave them are the most helpful comments as these are the ones that can help me improve my skills. Telling me "it looks great" doesn't help me find or see an area I may not have noticed or improve in.
