Hey All
Just finished off this fig about a half hour ago. This is a 75mm representation of a man of the Grenadier Company of the 17th Regiment of Infantry, 1854. I've decided to present him as being on the road from Calamita Bay, embarking on the campaign in the Crimea. The port was nicknamed by British troops, "Calamity Bay" and as is well known, the war in the Crimea was at best chaotic... hence, "Calamity to Chaos".

It's painted mostly with Vallejo acrylics and some Citadel washes. The base is a homecut chunk of Red Oak, stained Black Cherry and clear coated. Haven't ordered the plaque yet.

Thanx for the kind words everyone, much appreciated.
Checking empty lots and untended fields in and around the city, I found there were more weeds than grass filling the areas. Most of the weeds had small white or yellow flowers... This was the look I was going for for along the edge of the road that the figure is standing on.
Having two knees doesn't help you paint faster but having only one certainly allows for lots of spare time to get at the workbench

a good work!

Let me only a couple of tips or advice if you prefer ...
red, is a little flat, lacking contrast, in particular lack the shadows .. try adding a little green to your mixes and test on a piece of cardboard (white) the effect ...
the environment in particular where there are flowers ... the tall grass.....is too green!
Before putting the flowers next time try to do the clean-up of lands or dark green and then dry brush to try to give some lights with the yellow (along with the green) ... in order to move it and make it more credible .
I attach a couple of pictures to make it clear what I mean ...

Colin - I like the variant whites as well as your blues and reds. The groundwork is great. I may have painted the sides of the putty groundwork brown or black but that's just me.....the colour you have is perhaps best given the light wood.

Colin, I was torn... I usually paint the sides of the putty either chocolate brown or German camo brown black as well... but with the light groundwork and light base I thought it would look odd. So I just carried the base colour of the soil right down to the wood. The two colours are close and almost blend in... but I'm not sure if I'm completely married to it. I'm thinking a border stripe to separate the soil from the wood... either black or maybe pewter (like the uniform buttons) about 1/16" wide.

Thoughts?

I think I would go light brown of a close shade to the wood....not an exact match though. But what you have is good too.
