A Study in Green!

I give you "The Spectre". This is a 250mm United Empire Miniatures piece sculpted by Jim Maddox. It's LARGE! Nearly 8" from head to...........well, er, cape and he probably weighs close to a pound. Two resin pieces, the head (from the collar up) and the torso. Fairly straight forward piece. I'm not up on my Spectre-eze, but I'm told, and my research revelaed him to have white flesh and black eyes. He is obviously dressed in green. I was actually told by one club-mate that he is a "deposed" or "cast-out" former Green Lantern.........could explain the color scheme. Maybe some of you DC fans could help me with more info. Since he is basically two colors, white and green, I tried to keep my shadow tones for the flesh in shades of green so it would further emphasize his ghostly green aspect. All painted in oils. The base consists of a 3/4" clear acrylic rod, mounted in two wooden bases glued together and finished with some black paint and green airbrushed "energy" streaks for that super-hero emphasis! I made the name plaque from plastic sheet and a print from the ol' home printer. Sorry for the poor pictures, The greens are a bit more "vivd" in person but you get the idea. Thanks for looking and let me know what you think. UEM has these available now, and they are very reasonably priced considering the size.

Woah, this looks more than good to me! I do not know this character very well, but I guess, you nailed him. This paint job rocks a thousand times! I am not so into Superheroes, but here comes together what fits: A killer sculpt and a dead on paintjob!

    Hi Jay,
First of all, you did a great job on the figure! Especially for not knowing much about the character.
Your friend does a disservice to the character by saying he is a "fallen Green Lantern". The Spectre has been around since the early 40's. He is the spirit of murdered police detective Jim Corrigan who was brought back to "life" to avenge his death and was then charged to judge and punish those who are beyond man's laws severely and harshly.

Recently the position of The Spectre WAS held by the dead and disgraced Green Lantern, Hal Jordan, to redeem himself. And just before that The Spectre was a major character in the KINGDOM COME graphic novel with the art done by Alex Ross, which your figure was based on.
Just a couple of remarks about your rendering. The green should be more of an almost black-green and his skin should, a little more green. Although, yours is pretty close. His eyes CAN be solid black. Most of the time his features are hidden in the shadow of his hood. They have also been solid white or red when he was passing judgement. This guy is a supernatural character, you can't kill him - he's already dead! And he can kill anyone, even Superman. So, he's probably THE most powerful being in the DC Universe even if he is one of the least known.

I've got this bust as well, along with all the members of the Justice League of America. You're right, these are fantastic busts. I do mostly military figures but the kid will come out of me when I see a good superhero figure/bust I've GOT to have, these are my fun figures where I get to work with bright, primary colors.
    Best!

John, Guy, Stephen, Jay, Marc, Capten, too kind gentlemen, thanks for the kind words!

Pauly, you're exactly right, the first pics is probably the best one, and certainly shows what I think is the best colors. Thanks for the kind words.

Ric, you are a wealth of information my friend! Thanks for that. That is actually the picture I had a my desk while painting this piece! I also picked up the JLA Secret Origins book, as I'm working on the other 7 JLA busts as well! More to come on that in the future. I noticed the whiter flesh tones in that particular illustration, but wanted to push mine a bit further. I really wanted to get into the green shading. I pushed my shadows a bit further on the face because it is so far under his cloak I thought it would lend to the mysterious factor there. Glad you like him and again, thanks for all the info!

    Jay,
You have gone over to the dark side like Guy! However, your greens look outstanding.

Looks great Jay! It's fun to do the "not so military" ones every once in a while, and this one turned out excellent. Good job-
