    Hi Guys,

After seeing Paul Blabers Naval Seman (which I hasten to add is a really nice bust) I started to look at the Victoriasn Navy and found:

William Thomas Rickard who won the VC for actions in the Crimea

I have a very good friend in Jimbo from PF (Long suffering some might say!!!) so using Pauls bust as a base which eventually only left the facial features due to the amount of work he produced this for me . Everything has been resculpted , the medals were left for me as I could not put James through that , these are what I am working on at the moment .

Here is the grainy picture he worked from:

and here are some of the Jimbo sculpt before I started on the medals :

with the medal ribbons and clasps of various types:

More pics and details to follow when the medals are done then its on to the painting which I hope to do as some form of SBS .

    Thanks for looking

This is looking like a very impressive job. Really like character pieces where there is a good back story (y)
A lot of detail to be painted. Will be watching this one.

    Hi Guys ,

Thanks for all the comments ... off to do some medal(s) tonight , this is his actual grouping (Left to Right : CGM,VC (note Blue Ribbon for Naval Winners before it changed) , Legion of Honneur, British Crimen Medal (with 3 clasps) Turkish Crimean Medal)

    vcrickar.jpg

Here is a bit of information about our man :

William Thomas Rickard VC and CGM (10 February 1828 – 21 February 1905)

Rickard was 27 years old, and a quartermaster in the Royal Navy during the Crimean War when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
On 11 October 1855 in the sea of Azov Quartermaster Rickard went with the commander of HMS Weser and a seaman to destroy large quantities of forage on the shore of the Sivash. After a difficult and dangerous journey they reached their objective - the magazine of corn - and managed to ignite the stacks, but the guards were alerted and immediately opened fire and gave chase. The pursuit was so hot that the seaman, through fatigue, fell into the mud and could not extricate himself. Rickard, however, although he was himself exhausted, went back and assisted him. The three men finally reached their ship and later the look-outs reported that the fodder store had burned to the ground.

His actual VC is on display in the Lord Ashcroft Gallery at the Imperial War Museum , London.

In addition to the Victoria Cross he was also awarded the Conspicious Gallantry Medal ....a very brave man indeed.

This is him in later life :
