What I've been up to...

Here is a fun thing I've worked on:

It all started as a group project over at The Basement to build a fantasy bust. My project is a scratch built bust of The Tick (and progress pics are here). Now, few people have ever heard of The Tick. The Tick is the star of a superhero spoof cartoon from the mid '90's. It's a great cartoon that we watched in college. Later, they made a real life Tick show, but it just wasn't the same.

Being perhaps even more fond of the show than I, this is, to date, my husband's favorite thing I've ever sculpted/painted.

By the way, for the uninitiated, "Spooooon!" is The Tick's battle cry. :D

Seeing how I painted him over the last two days before MFCA, I'll be tweaking the paint job just a fuzz between now and Chicago. Sorry the pic isn't all that great.

Spoooon! My kids loved the Tick - particularly my youngest son, Kyle, who is a pretty fair comic artist himself.

Very well done, Wendy! Quite original!

    All the best,

    Thanks guys. :)

Nice to know some people are familiar with the big blue guy. I really want to sculpt the Sewer Urchin, but I probably should sculpt Arthur first. :D I do want to try sculpting full figures of them too. The practice with anatomy on The Tick is excuse enough...

    Excellent work, Wendy!

I don't know if you have ever posted your horse head that was at MFCA, but I thought that was also a very nice piece. In fact, I'd like to paint it!!

    Keep up the great work.

    Wendy,

    The Tick ROCKS!

Probably the coolest comic book hero ever, because he knew enough not to take himself seriously. Plus, being off the wall has its own merits.

I never saw the cartoon but remember the TV show fondly. The characters were great; Bat Manuel, etc. But alas, I guess it was too inspired for mass consumption. Most people like to have their thinking handed to them on a platter. Too bad. It was, perhaps, the best thing to appear on TV, maybe even ever. I guess that explains its dismal failure.

    SIGH!

    SPOOOOON!!

Doing a bust of the tick instantly elevates you from "figure artist" to "hipster".( not that we figure artists NEED elevation...I'm just sayin') Very well done! What's next? May I suggest a Renn and Stimpy vignette?

I hope your husband is happy with him. He is really great.

The Tick: I am the wild blue yonder. The front line in a never-ending battle between good and not-so-good. Together with my stalwart sidekick, Arthur, and the magnanimous help of some other folks I know, we form the yin to villany's malevolent yang. Destiny has chosen us. Wicked men, you face The Tick.

"Oh dear! I think I ran over a ninja back there!" "Well, keep driving, we're late as it is! I mean it's not like we hit a collie or anything" "I guess you're right."

[After paying for a coffee, the machine refuses to give coffee] Empty your bladder of that bitter, black urine they call coffee! It has its price and that price has been paid! ...Java devil, you are now my bitch.

You just have to check out the cartoon! You can be more off the wall in cartoon form. :D The first two of three seasons have been released on DVD. Ah, good times.

I have to warn you though, due to copyright issues, they changed some names in the live show from what they were in the cartoon.

Yeah, I'm not too enamored with 99% of shows out there. Heck, we just got cable last October and that was for the sole purpose of watching Wings games. Watching Big Cat Diary and shows like it is a bonus, I guess. :) But sitcoms and stuff like that...no, can't stand it. That's ok though - more time for painting and sculpting. :D

Thanks Glenn. I don't know about hipster, but I freely admit to being a geek. :D

You know, I never watched Ren and Stimpy, though I think my husband did. Having both released season of the Tick on DVD, I certainly enjoyed the "research" for the current bust. :D What's next: more Tick characters, possibly some Animaniacs, maybe sometime down the line Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Maaaaybe some orginal (meaning designed from my imagination) stuff based on the Chronicles of Prydain books. I suppose I should fit in some historical type figs too, eh?

So many subjects so little time.

    Hey Jeff. Great quotes!

Thanks Pat! I did post the horse head over at Timelines a while back. I should have spent a little longer cleaning and defining it, especially around the eye. Considering how clumsy I can be (you wouldn't believe how many times I've stabbed myself with the exacto knife!), the idea of handling hot metal is a little daunting. :D

Nice Wendy. It's a terrific likeness. Perhaps a villain later on? The Deadly Bulb perhaps?? I have all but one of "The Tick" episodes on my DVR.
