    Just started this guy.
I usually do blue eyes but tried for brown just for a change.
For the pupils I used black first then English uniform then lightened the English uniform and ran it on the lower half of the pupil.
Basecoat is brown sand but I will lighten as I want him to look cold.
I usually do the eyes first. I then use acrylics for the lids shadows and highlights. I use a little pre shade of cadmium red washes for shadows and will highlight with flat flesh and light flesh before applying oils. The oils never touch the eyelash areas. I find it more controllable using acrylics in these areas. I'm also going to attempt to paint his reversible smock white with autumn oakleaf showing at the collar. I'm going to undercoat the smock desert yellow like I did with winter whitewash armour to see what effect it has.

This firm's kits are ok. Could be better at this scale... How it turns out is all down to the painter then.

Great start so far Grant and I will follow closely.

I wanted to try and give this guy a really cold, fatigued and weathered appearance.
I tried to simulate broken viens on his cheeks with some purple/blue and deep reds for a ruddy complextion. Blue added to lips for coldness and I've given him chapped lips with a coldsore.
My camera washes out a lot of brown so he does have darker shadows. I'll try and get better ones for the next stage.

Worked the camera a bit more to try and get better fleshtones.
Touched up the face a wee bit more.
Painted the headscarf with Field grey and washes of green. Highlighted with yellows and seagrey. Shadows with dark green.
I'd forgotten how time consuming oakleaf was. I sat down to do the whites but just managed the camo.
Base of German camo beige with a little german camo black.
Chocolate brown, German camo black then light brown for the orangey bit.

The face is looking excellent Grant, real nice cold and miserable feel to it and the chapped lips and cold sore are a great touch to convey his harsh environment.
Going to follow this one mate as it looks very promising so far !!

Is the flesh oils or acrylics ?

    Hi Steve,
    ta for comment.
The flesh is done in Acrylic base with oils on top.
I paint the eye area with acrylics as you get more control ie. whites, pupil, iris and lids.
I tried acrylics for flesh but got no where with them.
Took me about 3 hours to complete the face.
    Cheers,
    Grant
