IMG_1150.jpg IMG_1151.jpg IMG_1152.jpg IMG_1153.jpg This one is a bit better then the first to my eye. I think the shading on the flesh is more subtle thanks to some suggestions from you guys. The red uniform went pretty well but I would have liked the gold to be brighter. I will look for something to highlight it with. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I used a base of a medium brown then some Humbrol acrylic bronze then some Humbrol acrylic gold for highlight. It just looks too dull.

The eyes were much easier this time though they are still far from perfect. It will come with time and practice. Please have a look and let me know if you have any suggestions. I'm having a great time with this and plan to keep at it and improve as much as possible.

    Thanks for looking.

    Hi Albert

Lovely to see your next piece and a really good result

Uniform looks good nice highlighting , personally I would push them more using a scarlet as this is a officer

As for the gold ....I like the way it's done , possibly put some highs in

The cords on the shake look good and your getting there with the eyes

    Your advancing with each piece

It a big IMG_1878.JPG from me

Why not enter a piece into the class of your choice in our OCTOBERS FOTM comp and also vote in SEPTEMBERS classes as well

There are a number of things that need improvement, most of which will come with practice ;).

You need to be tidier, there are many areas where you have either 'spilled' paint onto a neighbouring area, or not completely painted a specific part. His white shirt collar, on the chest belt, along the shoulder pieces, and the buttons. Brush discipline comes with practise.. practice..practice..:)
On the flesh tones on the face it looks like there 'water drying stains', if you thin your paint with water, dont thin to much, or apply in very light (thin) layers. If you are blending, use thin layers, and use a medium like retarded or glaze, to give you more working g time, rather than thinning g with (more) water. If you use tap water, are you in a 'hard water' area? Tap water can contain chalk and other impurities, which will adversely affect your paint. I am using distilled water, or glazing medium if I want some more control.
I like the Shako, a good shade of black, not to black, if that makes sense. Are you using inks? Inks are great for a rich and deep finish for leather and black.
Nap has already touched on the highlighting, that is something that takes a lot of practice (that word again...lol), it is easy to overdo it, as with most Miniature painting techniques, little by little does it, and sit back after you have done a pass, and look at it from a distance. It's easy to sit at the bench, and concentrate on a piece, and go overboard.

Overall, a good attempt, that just needs a little tidying up.

As Henk says, you need to be tidier and also improve on your blending to get smoother transitions, but I've seen much worse posted on here and the basics are all there. They just need refining.

Thank you very much. All your suggestions make plenty of sense and I'll work on them. I am using tap water but will pick up some distilled to see if that makes a difference and also try a retarded. I have some but have never used it.

No inks yet. It was all Andrea and Vallejo paints. one of my sets has inks in it and I will give them a go on the next figure.

The trick with inks is to use a light base coat, like light brown for leather, and use very dilute layers of the inks, gradually building up the colour and gradation. Really thin them down, 10%ink to 90% thinning medium, because the inks are very saturated colour. Practice with different colours and different ratios. And let each layer completely dry, before adding the next layer. It is a time consuming process, but the results can be spectacular.
    Any questions, ask away.

Ill sure give your suggestions a try. I don't mind it being a slow process. It's a hobby after all.

A good effort. It doesn't help that your photos are several times real size, which will accentuate even minor faults.

At a realistic size, the bust looks much better:

Great looking paint work! Use the big photos to your advantage, you will see where you need to touch up a couple of spots
